In-8° broché, exemplaire dérelié, mais en belle condition, 13 pp. Tiré à part extrait de la Bibliothèque Universelle janvier 1835 - - - - Le Dr Jean-François Coindet (1774-1834) doit sa notoriété à l'introduction de l'iode comme traitement du goitre en 1820 à Genève. Les succès fu…rent nombreux. La survenue chez de rares patients de symptômes d'un dysfonctionnement thyroïdien valut cependant à Coindet l'hostilité de certains confrères et d'autres milieux genevois influents. La récente parution de l'autobiographie d'Augustin-Pyramus de Candolle, le célèbre botaniste, contient quelques informations nouvelles sur le rôle du Dr Jean-Pierre Colladon dans l'Affaire de l'iode. Présentons brièvement les deux protagonistes principaux. L'un, J.-F. Coindet (1774-1834) fait ses premières études à l'Académie de Genève, puis se rend à Edimbourg étudier la médecine. En 1796, il s'y marie et sa femme donne naissance à son fils Jean-Charles, qui deviendra aussi médecin. Après obtention du doctorat en 1797, puis deux ans de perfectionnement à Paris, J.-F. Coindet revient s'installer dans sa ville natale. A côté de sa pratique médicale, il devient médecin de l'hôpital, ainsi que médecin des prisons et des épidémies pour le département du Léman. Il dirige aussi le Bureau de bienfaisance et fait partie de la Société de la vaccine. L'autre, le docteur Jean-Pierre Colladon (1769-1842) fait des études littéraires à Göttingen, puis médicales à Edimbourg. Il pratique un temps en France, où il est l'un des premiers à introduire l'inoculation de la vaccine, puis revient lui aussi exercer sa profession à Genève, où il est un membre actif de la Société médico-chirurgicale ; il publie quelques notes sur le choléra et les bains. C'est en 1819 que Coindet suggère que le principe actif de l'éponge calcinée ou du varech, utilisés de longue date dans le traitement du goitre, devait être l'iode, découvert par Bernard Courtois en 1811. L'analyse chimique des extraits ayant confirmé cette hypothèse, il fait préparer des solutions iodées iodure de potassium, solution d'iodure iodée ou iode dissous dans l'alcool par le pharmacien Auguste Le Royer. Coindet en prescrit des gouttes à doses croissantes, commençant par environ 0,1 gramme par jour durant la première semaine, 0,15 la seconde, puis 0,2 la troisième et les suivantes. Le résultat ne se fait pas attendre : en peu de semaines, le goitre se ramollit puis diminue de volume. En juillet 1820, il publie ses premiers résultats et peut affirmer que l'iode constitue un des plus puissants remèdes dont la chimie moderne ait enrichi la matière médicale.1Pourtant, cette puissance même se révèle rapidement problématique, car les goitreux se précipitent en masse chez les pharmaciens. En décembre 1820, lors d'une séance de la Société susmentionnée, le Dr Jean-Pierre Colladon rapporte qu'il en a prescrit à neuf patients et observé des effets néfastes chez six d'entre eux. Dans plusieurs cas l'iode avait produit des douleurs gastriques, chez une patiente de la bonne société le mal avait même produit une affection broncho-pulmonaire qui s'avérera fatale deux mois plus tard. Colladon conclut que l'iode est un dangereux poison, même si, dans un premier temps, ses effets paraissent favorables.2En janvier 1821, l'assemblée des médecins, des chirurgiens et des pharmaciens, saisie par les autorités genevoises, propose d'exiger que la vente de l'iode soit interdite en l'absence d'une prescription médicale et le gouvernement se rallie à cet avis.
