Burgundy, cloth-covered boards w/light edge/corner wear and gilded titling on spine; Binding still extremely stiff, hinges like new; Text clean; on page 238-239 the page edges are torn as if this was a uncut page that was forced open; There is also foxing and age related spotting on frontise/end pages. First published in France under the title Byron et le Besoin de la Fatalité , and this is an English translation by Ethel Colburn Mayne. The book examines… the causes of Lord Byron's allegedly incestuous relationship with his half-sister Augusta Leigh and its effects on his relationship with his wife Lady Byron, and argues that Byron had sex with Leigh because he saw himself in mythical terms as destined to commit a terrible crime. George Orwell reviewed the book in The Adelphi in 1932 and described it as "a fair-minded, discerning book, very interesting to anyone who wants to see the whole story of Byron, his wife and his half-sister thoroughly thrashed out." The book is bound in the original purple cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with some scattered foxing, including some marks on the title-page. The foxing is mostly light although the half-title page and last page are browned and more heavily foxed. There is also foxing on the edge of the text block, and on some pages this has seeped a little way into the fore margin. A name and date has been written on the front fixed endpaper. The unclipped dustwrapper has some shelf wear with light soiling and the spine is slightly browned. The spine ends are lightly bumped. The wrapper is in a removable clear protective cover.

It is also quite rare. I'm seeing only one other copy for sale on the Internet. You can see the red covers in the photos. The front cover has a few small areas of disco…loration. The top edge of the spine has very light fraying. The red of the spine is somewhat faded. The gilt lettering there has very light fading, but is quite legible. There is speck-sized rub-through at the front corners. The general condition of the edges and corners is very good. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout. The inside covers and end papers are a slightly lighter red color. They are in excellent condition and very clean. There is a tissue guard protecting the frontispiece, a photograph of James R. Murphy. Both the frontispiece and tissue guard are in very good shape and very clean. There is one other illustration, a photograph of a rather large class in the James R. Murphy Real Estate School. That illustration is also in excellent condition. The pages are exceptionally clean. I'm not seeing any soiling as I scroll through them. I'm also not seeing any creasing. There are no markings. No attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. Credit for the excellent condition of the book goes only slightly to me. I've owned it for less than a decade. The book came from the library of former Assistant Secretary Of War and High Commissioner of Postwar Germany, John J. McCloy. He did not write his name in the book.
