Condition: New. 2008 N & M Press reprint of 1942 original Edition . SB. 20pp. BW illustrated This short illustrated booklet, produced early in the Second World War under War Office guidance, is designed to teach tactics of fighting patrolling to inexperienced officers commanding equally raw recruits. The author is keen to emphasise aggression and maintaining morale - and cautions against splitting the patrol : ' Keep your men together, keep up momentum ( and) you will find yourself enjoying the finest sport on earth'. There are handy hints - and very clear diagrams - on such subjects as street fighting; clearing houses, and synchronisation. Gives a clear idea of the sort of instructions issued to Home Guard and UK Defence forces when a German invasion was expected at any moment.

SB 39pp. line drawings + plans (some in colour) 2016 N&MP Reprint of 1940 Original Edition Defence of Houses is one of a series of Home Guard training manuals written by Colonel G. A. Wade in 1942, when the threat of German invasion remained a serious concern. This handbook explains how ordinary houses could be assessed and adapted for defence, considering their strength, cellars, surroundings and suitability for all-round protection. With practical advice and illustrations, it offers an intriguing insight into the methods taught to Britain's wartime volunteers.Think: is it strong? Has it a cellar? Are its surrounding suitable? Is it capable of all-round defence?"Make your defences so good and so cunning that when the enemy begins to attack" "you can heave a sigh of relief and say, 'He's going to ask for it, and he will get it!'Colonel G. A. Wade was a British soldier and author who wrote a series of training manuals for the British Home Guard in the expectation of a German invasion. The series was originally published by Gale & Polden.

Condition: New. SB 23pp. line drawings maps & plans ( some in colour) 2016 N&MP Reprint of 1940 Original Edition A Home Guard fighting patrol was a specialised and highly mobile tactical unit formed during the Second World War to actively seek out, ambush and neutralise enemy airborne troops and small raiding parties.Rather than remaining at static observation posts or guarding factories and other key locations, fighting patrols operated aggressively in the field, using stealth, surprise and detailed knowledge of the local terrain to hunt down potential threats.Their training placed particular emphasis on airborne defence, preparing them to confront German paratroopers and glider-borne infantry before the enemy could establish and consolidate a position.Patrols developed advanced stealth and fieldcraft skills, including silent movement, camouflage and night fighting. Some even used hessian boot covers to reduce noise while moving. Training could also include close-quarters and hand-to-hand combat.A detailed understanding of the local landscape was another crucial advantage. Fighting patrols learned to use woodlands, rural lanes, hedgerows and built-up areas to conceal their movements, establish ambushes and attack an enemy with the element of surprise. In essence, the fighting patrol transformed the Home Guard from a largely defensive force into a mobile, offensive unit capable of actively seeking out and confronting an invading force.
