SB 23pp. line drawings maps & plans ( some in colour) 2016 N&MP Reprint of 1940 Original Edition A Home Guard fighting patrol was a specialised and highly mobile tactical unit formed during the Second World War to actively seek out, ambush and neutralise enemy airborne troops and small raiding parties.Rather than remaining at static observation posts or guarding factories and other key locations, fighting patrols operated aggressively in the field, using stealth, surprise and detailed knowledge of the local terrain to hunt down potential threats.Their training placed particular emphasis on airborne defence, preparing them to confront German paratroopers and glider-borne infantry before the enemy could establish and consolidate a position.Patrols developed advanced stealth and fieldcraft skills, including silent movement, camouflage and night fighting. Some even used hessian boot covers to reduce noise while moving. Training could also include close-quarters and hand-to-hand combat.A detailed understanding of the local landscape was another crucial advantage. Fighting patrols learned to use woodlands, rural lanes, hedgerows and built-up areas to conceal their movements, establish ambushes and attack an enemy with the element of surprise. In essence, the fighting patrol transformed the Home Guard from a largely defensive force into a mobile, offensive unit capable of actively seeking out and confronting an invading force.
