CXVII; seconda metà del secolo X), il volume è una introduzione ad alcuni aspetti stilistici e contenutistici dell'omiletica anonima in lingua inglese antica. Prodotto di uno scriptorium insulare non di facile individuazione, il Vercelli Book costituisce un interessante esempio di miscellanea di testi in prosa e in versi di carattere religioso; all'interno di tale raccolta, un peso primario assume un nucleo di sermoni dal forte impianto escatologico, frutto del riutilizzo e della rilettura di materiali parimenti tratti dalla tradizione latina cristiana, da quella iberno-insulare così come da quella pre-cristiana. Testi che per strutture compositive appaiono in continui rispetto alla tradizione latina dell'ami letica composita, i sermoni escatologici vercellesi risentono in maniera chiara dell'influsso latino e irlandese, così come della forte componente ritmica tanto pregnante in ambito iberno-insulare. Proprio tale propensione verso un incedere ritmato, presente in buona parte della letteratura religiosa anonima inglese antica, appare prodromo di quella prosa allitterante che costituisce elemento portante dell'omiletica dei due grandi predicatori del tardo periodo Anglosassone: AElfric e Wulfstan. I sermoni vercellesi risultano in questo senso utile elemento di analisi dell'evoluzione del genere omiletico in ambito insulare nei secoli x e xi, così come importante strumento di lettura della funzione pratica del codice che li contiene. E, insieme a esso, dell'ambito culturale che li ha prodotti. Book.
