Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a detailed history of wood engraving, a technique that dates back to ancient China and was long used for religious and instructional purposes. The author traces the development of the technique from its early, often crude beginnings to its golden age under the likes of Albert Durer. Engraving on wood achieved the status of high art under Durer, who employed it to reproduce his grandest and most complex designs. While the advent of copper engraving led to a decline in its popularity, wood engraving was revived during the 19th century and given new life by a host of talented artists including Bewick and Jegher. The book concludes by discussing the advent of new engraving techniques in metal and the decline of wood engraving till its eventual rediscovery by modern artists like West and Flaxman. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
