The author traces the development of the technique from its early, often crude beginnings to its golden age under the likes of Albert Durer. Engraving on wood achieved the status of high art under Durer, who employed it to reproduce his grandest and most complex designs. While the advent of copper engraving led to a decline in its popularity, wood engraving was revived during the 19th century and given new life by a host of talented artists including Bewick and Jegher. The book concludes by discussing the advent of new engraving techniques in metal and the decline of wood engraving till its eventual rediscovery by modern artists like West and Flaxman. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Charlton Nesbit (illustrator). 4th Edition. 8vo. A small oval stipple portrait by Ridley after Edridge of the author. ix, 119 and eleven wood engraved illustrations. Bound in full tree calf leather with gilt decoration on spine, leather label. Ex libris plate of D.A.N Russell. Binding is slightly worn but very firm, inside two leaves are a little grubby, see photo, otherwise a very good clean copy. This edition includes 'The Fakenham Ghost'. The second of Bloomfields books to appear, it was first printed in 1802. The woodcuts are very much in the style of Bewick and are noted by Hugo, but were in fact by the wood engraver, Charlton Nesbit. Nesbit did a lot of work for the publishers Vernor & Hood and his work often appears in their publications.
