La nuova nazione, formatasi in s…eguito al processo di espansione verso l'Ovest, avviatosi con la guerra di Indipendenza (1776), costruisce la propria identità creando una mitologia intorno a quegli eventi e a quei personaggi che ne appaiono i più autentici interpreti: gente comune che ha creato l'America. È proprio qui, nell'esaltazione del quotidiano, nella cronaca della vita di frontiera, che si racchiude l'identità americana. Protagonista comprimaria è la natura, con le immense foreste e le sconfinate praterie, una natura selvaggia, incontaminata, fertilissima e solenne. Se nell'ultimo scorcio dell'Ottocento l'ascendenza dell'impressionismo francese è decisiva nella scelta di soggetti intimistici e nell'avversione per il grandioso, all'inizio del XX secolo gli artisti raccolti intorno a Robert Henri introducono nello scenario della pittura americana una nuova vitalità espressiva, reclamando un rinnovamento dei soggetti, meno colti e più popolari, tuttavia dal punto di vista stilistico restano ancorati alla pittura della generazione precedente. A questa prima ondata di modernismo segue un ripiegamento verso forme di rinnovato realismo: dall'American Scene al Regionalismo, al Realismo sociale. Il clamoroso crollo di Wall Street e la conseguente Depressione del 1929 segnano l'inizio di un periodo di crisi fronteggiata con successo dal New Deal del presidente Roosevelt il quale vara importanti iniziative governative, come il Federai Art Project. Parallelamente Stieglitz elabora un compromesso fra astrazione e realismo, dando vita al movimento precisionista. Da qui prende avvio la seconda ondata di modernisti i quali sono ora pronti ad accettare l'astrazione pura e capaci di assimilarne le teorie formali. Il senso delle dimensioni e della grandezza suggerito dalla vastità del continente e presente nella pittura di paesaggio di pieno Ottocento, ha la sua naturale continuazione in buona parte dell'arte contemporanea, specialmente nelle tele volutamente smisurate dell'Espressionismo astratto e della Pop Art. Di fatto la produzione figurativa americana, considerata dagli stessi intellettuali americani con affettuosa sufficienza, ha subito un lungo e ingiusto oscuramento e solo recentemente, a partire cioè dai primi anni Sessanta del XX secolo, si registra una decisiva inversione di tendenza.
