Il dibattito poetico intorno a questo fenomeno viene tracciato e i…llustrato attraverso uno spoglio di articoli pubblicati in riviste e giornali di quegli anni (1926- 1936) in cui si riscontrano vari dibattiti letterari, partendo dalla polemica tra calligrafi e contenutisti, per arrivare alla definizione della nozione di neorealismo usata da autori quali Umberto Barbaro, Ugo Dèttore e Eurialo De Michelis nei primi anni Trenta. L'essenza di questo dibattito spesso sfugge, forse, perché nella ricezione del dopoguerra è passata l'immagine degli anni Trenta come degli anni dell'Art pour l'art, della poesia pura e dell'ermetismo, e con la prosa d'arte raffinata della «Ronda», che nel suo rifiuto di confrontarsi con la realtà si contrapponeva polemicamente al fascismo e alla nascente società di massa. Dimenticata dai critici, perché troppo legata agli scrittori fascisti, o magari perché oscurata dalla stagione neorealista degli anni Quaranta, che ha rivendicato gelosamente per sé l'aggettivo "realista", disconoscendo l'eredità del neorealismo degli anni Trenta come tendenza ancora troppo legata al decadentismo (cioè, in realtà, al modernismo). Si potrebbe dire che il modernismo degli anni Trenta è decisivo nella costruzione di una linea che nasce dopo la stagione delle avanguardie storiche (all'incirca negli anni della Prima guerra mondiale) e si esaurisce alla fine degli anni Trenta (nel 1936, con Quartiere Vittoria, forse l'ultimo grande romanzo realista e modernista).
