Good, spine sunned/darkened with light wear, slightly cracked inner hinge, clean contents. The first 156 pages are devoted to chess - elements, laws, power of pieces, endings, openings,33 illustrative games, 32 problems. The final 30 pages cover draughts - rules, practice games, problems, critical situations, Polish draughts.

John Proctor (illustrator). No stated date but the preface is dated 1869. Possible first edition from this date. xi, 532pp., a frontispiece showing a game of cricket and many other in-text and full-page illustrations. All edges gilt. Captain Crawley was a pseudonym of George Frederick Pardon (1824- 1884), an English journalist and writer, especially on sports and games. In this book he describes a wide range of healthy and "manly" games and pastimes for boys, and has divided the work into the following sections: Games without Implements, Games with Implements, Miscellaneous Games, Simple Indoor Games for Winter Evenings, Grand Ball Games, Games of Skill with Various Implements, Aquatic Amusements, Gymnastics, Games of Skill and Science, and Domestic Pets. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with gold and black titling and designs on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling and staining to the boards. The spine ends are bumped with a little bot of damage to the cloth at the bottom of the spine and there is a little damage and loss to the cloth on the tip of the bottom front corner. The contents are tight and clean with a number (381) written on the front free endpaper. Slight cup stain to front board, and wanting ffep.
