Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book compiles two pioneering reports on the natural history, geology, and potential economic development of the Japanese island of Yesso (Hokkaido), written by renowned scientists William P. Blake and Lyman. Commissioned by the Japanese government in the late 19th century, these reports provide a fascinating glimpse into the island's diverse mineral resources, including coal, sulfur, gold, and copper, and its rich potential for agricultural development. The author argues that Yesso possesses a climate similar to the northern United States and Europe and that its fertile soil, abundant timber and water resources make it well-suited for large-scale farming. However, the author emphasizes that the island's development must proceed sustainably, with careful attention to infrastructure, resource management, and the well-being of its inhabitants. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents the captivating findings from 1862-1873, a period marked by Japan's first steps toward industrialization and the opening of its doors to the West. It features several documents from an American mining engineer and geologist, Professor William P. Blake, who, commissioned by the Japanese government, performed scientific surveys in Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan's main islands. Included are reports by Blake's contemporaries - A.G. Warfield, Henry S. Munroe, and Louis Boehmer - each shedding light on geological and natural resource exploration and mapping, industries and commodities found in the region, as well as the challenges and possibilities that lay ahead. This book offers an invaluable firsthand account of a pivotal period of Japanese history, as seen through the eyes of foreign experts. Original colour woodblock-printed wraparound cover art of flowers, black lettering on front cover, punch-sewn at gutter margin w/ white silk braid as issued, preserved in the original light gray-green silk folding slipcase, printed label on front cover, w/ TL copy from Representative James W. First edition of this very scarce work detailing the achievements of General Horace Capron (1804-1885), as special advisor to the Hokkaido, Japan Development Commission. Capron spent four years in Hokkaido suggesting many ways to develop the frontier island, including the introduction of large-scale farming using American methods, developing the Devon and Durham cattle herds on Hokkaodi, and actively establishing experimental farms. His recommendation for growing wheat and rye led to the establishment of Sapporo Beer, one of Japan's first breweries. Capron founded Laurel, Maryland, commanded the 14th Illinois Cavalry Regiment during the Civil War as the oldest Cavalry Officer, and served as the Commissioner of agriculture under Presidents Andrew Johnson and Ulysses S. Grant. See: Issa Tanimura, Hokkaido beginning laid to U.S. General: Horace Capron (1936); Horace Capron at 200: A Laurel Founder's Live, Laurel Historical Society, pp. 1279-1291.
