The publication of Theophrastus on Stones is without question an important event for scholars and students interested in the history of pure and applied science. By common consent one of the greatest of the G…reek philosophers and naturalists, Theophrastus is still a highly significant figure in the development of mineralogy and other scientific and technological area, yet no modern annotated translation of his treatise. This book, which includes the original text, an English translation, and a commentary, gives the reader---with or without a knowledge of Greek--an invaluable interpretation of the technical aspects of the treatise and the rationale of the processes described in it. Many minds were brought to bear upon the labor involved in an undertaking which required specialized scholarship, both scientific and linguistic. Professional book seller with storefront since 1975. All orders carefully packaged and promptly shipped.

Theophrastus classified rocks and gems based on their behavior when heated, further grouping minerals by common properties, such as amber and magnetite, which both have the… power of attraction.[50][51][52] He also comments on the effect of heat on minerals and their different hardnesses. He made the first known reference to pyroelectricity, noting that the mineral tourmaline becomes charged when heated. He also considers the practical uses of various stones, such as the minerals necessary for the manufacture of glass; for the production of various pigments of paint such as ochre; and for the manufacture of plaster. This work is noted for being systematic and is comparatively free from fable and magic. CONDITION 238 pages. Copy is bright and crisp with unworn DJ in protective sleeve. The only slight faults are occasional spot to edge and slight tape ghosting to rear ep where DJ cover has been taped to fit. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
