Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book, a documentary history of the Church of England in North Carolina from 1742 to 1763, provides readers an invaluable glimpse into the complexities of the church's existence within a colonial society shaped by political, economic, and social forces. The author presents a chronological collection of documents that reveal the challenges faced by Anglican priests in an environment that was often hostile or indifferent to their mission. Despite the shortage of clergy and inadequate funding, these priests sought to establish a lasting presence for the church, working within the constraints of an underdeveloped colony and a frontier mentality. The book highlights the role of vestries, elected lay leaders who held considerable authority over the church's affairs, often clashing with the authority of the clergy. The documents in this volume reveal the tensions between the desire for local control and the need for ecclesiastical oversight, a conflict that would continue to shape the church's history. The author explores the impact of the Great Awakening and the growing influence of dissenting denominations on the church, examining the strategies employed by Anglican clergy to counter these challenges. This book contributes significantly to our understanding of the complexities of religious life in colonial North Carolina. It sheds light on the challenges faced by the Church of England as it sought to establish itself in a new and often hostile environment, and it illuminates the resilience and adaptability of Anglican clergy in the face of adversity.
