Photograph
No Binding. Condition: Very Good. Collection of three original black-and-white cabinet card photographs tipped in on beige and dark brown boards. Two of the photos show portraits of Dorothea and Barbara Curtis. The third photo possibly shows Dorothea and one of her brothers, Warden or Laurence. Each of the children wears formal attire. They are posed in photography studios with seats, props, and artificial backdrops. Each of the cabinet cards was produced by a different photographer. The E. R. Curtiss (Madison, Wisconsin) cabinet card is made of dark brown board with gilt edges and gilt lettering printed on front. The A. C. Isaacs (Madison, Wisconsin) cabinet card has beige board with brown lettering printed on front. The L. Peavey (Faribault, Minnesota) cabinet card has beige board with no lettering on front. No date, circa 1880s-1890s. 4 1/4" x 6 1/2." Each of the cabinet cards is very clean and intact except for light age toning, slight rubbing, a few spots of scuffing, and minuscule wear to extremities. Each of the cabinet cards and the entire collection as a whole are Very Good, almost Near Fine. Each of the photographers' names and locations are also printed on the back of each cabinet card. This is a collection of three cabinet cards, each of which are portraits. Two of the portraits show sisters Dorothea Curtis and Barbara Curtis together as children. The remaining portrait possibly shows a toddler-age Dorothea seated with an unknown boy who is perhaps one of her brothers, Warden or Laurence. Dorothea Curtis (1878-1963) and Barbara Curtis (1882-?) were two of five children of Charles Albert Curtis (1835-1907) and Harriette (also, Harriet) "Hattie" Curtis (nee Hughes; 1846-1924). Charles had an accomplished career as a military officer and instructor. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War and achieved the rank of Captain for his services. Charles also fought in the "Indian Wars" of the American Southwest and later taught as a professor of Military Science and Tactics at several universities and military academies. As an author, he contributed articles and stories to several magazines and wrote one book, Captured by the Navajos (1898). Charles worked as a Military Science and Tactics professor at the University of Wisconsin from 1898 until his passing in 1907. Dorothea and Barbara's brothers were Warden (also, Wardon) Allan (also, Allen) Curtis (1867-1940), Laurence Albert Curtis (1872-1939), and George Curtis (1874-1877). Dorothea graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1901 and married Wallace Chickering. Barbara graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1904 and married Earl B. Rose. Edwin Rodney Curtiss (1836-1911) was a photographer who had a studio based in Madison, Wisconsin. Some records show that Curtiss moved to Madison in 1859. A. C. Isaacs (?-?) was also a Madison-based photographer. Lewis Peavey (?-?) was a photographer based in Faribault, Minnesota. The cabinet card was a type of photograph mounted on board. The actual photo of the cabinet card was typically a thin albumen print. Portraits were a common subject of cabinet cards. Cabinet cards saw a rise in popularity during the 1860s and 1870s and had overtaken, but not supplanted, the earlier and smaller carte de visite (CDV). Cabinet cards began to decline in popularity in the United States during the 1890s and early 1900s but maintained a relatively steady following in Europe. The last commercial cabinet card was produced during the 1930s.

paperback. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.
