Add to basketNo Binding. Condition: Very Good. Leaf is 262 x 203 mm. Verso blank. Transcription: "Fox Hill, Reading. Nov. 1/13 My dear Reginald, As I always think to speak of you! My very warm thanks to you for your very kind congratulations & good wishes - I need not tell you that they gave me very great pleasure. We have fought some stiff battles together - now you must fight them in front of me - Always I shall remember your unfailing kindness & consideration to me. Your friend, Rufus D. Isaacs" Isaacs and McKenna were two elite figures of the Liberal government of H.H. Asquith. The letter is dated weeks after Isaacs was appointed Lord Chief Justice of England. Isaacs was the first Jew to hold the office of Lord Chief Justice in British history. To accept this lifetime judicial post, Isaacs had to step down as Member of Parliament for Reading and resign as Attorney General - leaving behind the highly adversarial arena of frontline politics. This milestone explains the tone of the letter. The "very kind congratulations & good wishes" he references were sent to mark his historic elevation to the judiciary. Rufus D. Isaacs (later the 1st Marquess of Reading) was one of the most brilliant barristers of his generation. He later went on to serve as the British Ambassador to the United States and the Viceroy of India. Fox Hill in Reading, printed on the letterhead, was his personal country estate. Reginald McKenna (1863-1943) was a Liberal politician who was serving as the Home Secretary in 1913. He and Isaacs had spent years in the Cabinet together. "We have fought some stiff battles together." Isaacs describes the intense political climate of the era. As Cabinet allies, Isaacs and McKenna had recently tag-teamed several exhausting political crises: The People's Budget & Constitutional Crisis (1909-1911), The Marconi Scandal (1912-1913), The Suffragette Movement. Isaacs writes, "now you must fight them in front of me," meaning McKenna will remain on the political frontlines, while Isaacs will now be in a neutral position as a judge. As Lord Chief Justice, Rufus Isaacs presided over the sensational 1916 treason trial of Sir Roger Casement, an Irish nationalist who traveled to Germany during World War I to secure German military assistance for the Easter Rising. Casement was captured shortly after landing in Ireland from a German submarine with a load of rifles. Because Casement's actions occurred outside the realm (in Germany), Isaacs had to interpret the ancient Treason Act 1351. The law, written in Norman French, suggested treason could only be committed within the King's realm. Isaacs ruled that a comma in the original 1351 text meant a subject could be guilty of treason for acts committed either inside OR outside the country if they gave aid to the King's enemies. This strict judicial interpretation resulted in Casement's conviction and execution, leading to the phrase that Casement was "hanged by a comma." Many did not want him executed because he fought for human rights in the Congo and Peru, so the government leaked evidence that he was a sexually active homosexual and the public turned against him. In 1921, Isaacs was appointed Viceroy and Governor-General of India, becoming the first and only Jew to hold the highest office in the British Raj. His tenure occurred during an era of immense political friction. Isaacs arrived in India at the height of Mahatma Gandhi's Non-Cooperation Movement. Though he preferred a conciliatory legal approach, the rising political temperatures forced his administration into harsh crackdowns. In March 1922, under Isaacs's authority, British colonial officials arrested Mahatma Gandhi on charges of sedition, sentencing him to six years in prison (though Gandhi was released early in 1924 following surgery). He took a famously firm line with India's autonomous rulers. In a letter to the Nizam of Hyderabad, Isaacs established the "Reading Doctrine," flatly stating that the British Crown's supremacy in India was absolute. . .…
