Cloth. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. A NEAR FINE, bright, clean, tight copy sans rips/tears, stains, discoloration and interior markings. 50 full page, full color photographic reproductions of Buxton's Balkan War Zone paintings with accompanying descriptive captions. "It was the summer of 1994 when Laura Buxton, her conscience pricked by the tragedy in Bosnia-Heregovina, hitchiked alone thorugh the Balkans. Tossing her boards and bag of painting gear into the backseats of little cars, she attempted to answer her drivers' questions in a polyglot of English, French, Italian, and Slavic. Whe she reached her destination, Mostar-formerly a great cultural crossroads, now cynically nicknamed the "Beirut of the Balkans"-her conscience and her purpose were no more clear. Intitially, she planned to execute a few sketches of the places and people she encountered, but she found herself extremely depressed by the human catastrophe. "I had to make a big decision," she later said. "Either I would give up the whole idea of painting-which I came very close to doing, because I didn't think I was able to paint anything of consequence-and offer myself full-time to a relief agency, or else just let myself feel selfish and go on and paint. I chose the painting." 88 pages. "Ruined Landscapes" is Buxton's Balkan legacy. her curiously unpeopled paintings capture the tragedy of what was ultimately a war on culture and history." $34.95 in publication. NOTE: Due to size and weight of book additional shipping cost may be requested/required for EXPEDITED and OUT-OF-U.S. shipment in accordance with destination. GJ4. Laura Buxton (illustrator).

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. By means of exceptionally concrete and direct language, Laura Stott's poems lift dark matter up out of the shared unknown and give it shape. They have the simplicity of blue shadows and bells, the curiously beautiful postures of shore birds in a marsh. This is a book of clear-eyed and original work. Neither the poems nor the stunning images that accompany them melt away as you read - they keep reminding that mystery inheres not in abstract complexities but in the essential experience of our inner lives as they encounter and create the world. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability. Buxton, Kathryn Stott (illustrator).

Paperback. Condition: New. Buxton, Kathryn Stott (illustrator).
