About the author:Gilbert Burnet (18 September 1643 - 17 March 1715) was a Scottish philosopher and historian, and Bishop of Salisbury. He was fluent in Dutch, French, Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. Burnet was highly respected as a cleric, a preacher, an academic, a writer and a historian. He was always closely associated with the Whig party, and was one of the few close friends in whom King William III confided.[Source: Wiki]About the work:He next undertook, at the suggestion of Sir William Jones, the attorney-general, his 'History of the Reformation in England,' for which Evelyn contributed some materials. For a while he was hindered in his researches in the Cotton Library by Lauderdale's influence and misrepresentation of his object, but after the publication of the first volume he was granted free access. This publication, however, did not take place until 1679, when, the country being in the throes of the popish terror, the spirit in which the work is written caused it to receive so enthusiastic a welcome, that the thanks of both houses were given to him, with a request that he would complete the work. The second volume appeared in 1681, with equal applause; it is said that the historical portion was written in the space of six weeks; the third and last volume was published in 1714; the abridgment of the whole work in 1719.[Source: WikiSource, taken from Dictionary of National Biography, 1885-1900, Volume 07 - Burnet, Gilbert by Osmund Airy]. …

Full Leather. Condition: Very Good. Full-Leather. No Jacket. Fourth Edition [1st 1692]. Privately Printed. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. An enduring treatise on the duties of pastors to their flocks. At random, from this book: "There is another sort of sick Persons, who abound more in Towns than in the Country; those are the troubled in Mind; of these there are two Sorts, some have committed erroneous Sins, which kindle a Storm in their Consciences; and that ought to be Cherished till they have compleated a Repentance proportioned to the Nature and Degree of their Sin. If Wrong has been done to another, Reparation and Restitution must be made to the utmost of the Party's Power. If Blood has been shed, a long Course of Fasting and Prayer; a total Abstinence from Wine, if Drunkenness gave the Rise to it; a making up the Loss to the Family on which it has befallen, must be enjoyned." The book's 244 pages are filled with ancient wisdom as pertinent now as then. Full Contemporary calf in handsome condition: rich patina, five raised bands on spine with gilt decorations and clear Morocco label. All pages and end pages present. Gilt decorations on cover-edges. References: ESTC T144689 Author Bio: Gilbert Burnet (16431715) was a Scottish theologian, historian, and Whig-leaning churchman who moved at the heart of late Stuart power. Closely connected to leading political and religious figures of his age, Burnet's History of His Own Time became one of the most influentialand contestedfirst-hand narratives of Restoration and Revolution Britain. Written with the immediacy of a participant-observer, it remains a cornerstone source for the period: Charles II and James II, the crises of church and state, and the transformation of the monarchy at the Glorious Revolution, continuing through Queen Anne and the Peace of Utrecht. Synopsis: A handsome first edition folio set of Burnet's famous late-Stuart chronicle, issued posthumously and long valued for its proximity to events and personalities. Volume I covers the Restoration of Charles II through the Revolution settlement under William and Mary, with a prefixed summary recap of affairs in church and state from James I to the Restoration. Volume II continues from the Revolution through the conclusion of the Peace at Utrecht in the reign of Queen Anne, with the Author's Life added by the editor. A particularly attractive feature of this set is the presence of the well-known manuscript-style deposition note (in a red-ruled box), stating that the original manuscript of both volumes would be deposited in the Cotton Libraryan emblematic reminder of the text's early custodial history and the seriousness with which the work was positioned from the outset. Closely associated with the Whig party, he was one of the few close friends with whom King William III confided, and hence the dedication to the King in this volume. The Thirty-nine Articles of Religion, finalised in 1571, are the historically defining statements of doctrines and practices of the Church of England with respect to the controversies of the English Reformation. The Thirty-nine Articles form part of the Book of Common Prayer used by the Church of England and the worldwide Anglican Communion (including the Episcopal Church), as well as by denominations outside of the Anglican Communion that identify with the Anglican tradition.…
