Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Original publisher's beige paper wrappers. Text printed in black ink. 5 1/2" x 8." Twenty-two pages, complete. Pages are clean and intact overall except for slight rippling and chipping to edges, light to moderate age toning or darkening, and several small dampstains throughout (text is unaffected). A Very Good copy. This is a sermon that was originally delivered at the Reformed Dutch Church on Broome Street, New York on the occasion of Thanksgiving Day, held that year on December 9, 1830. In his sermon, Brodhead gives thanks to the Lord on the occasion of the holiday. He believes that religious and moral principles are essential for the functioning of civil society and government. He states, "If the very existence of government depends essentially on the will of the people; every reflecting person must perceive the great importance of having that will controlled and guided by the great powers of religion and morality. Without the operation of these, history and observation proclaim aloud, social order cannot exist." Brodhead denounces "monarchical and ecclesiastical tyranny" but ardently warns against its inverse, "infidelity and licentiousness." Brodhead fears that principles that are too liberal and unbridled will ignite wars of "opinions" dictated by "passions" or emotions. He lauds George Washington and says that the first president upheld religion and morality as checks on social behavior. Part of Washington's quotes herein read, "[R]eligion and morality are indispensable supports." Washington refers to them being supports of "political prosperity." Brodhead contends that national morality cannot be upheld without religion. He indirectly talks about the tumultuous revolution in France and fears of an outbreak in Europe of despotism and disorder. Brodhead then turns his attention to gratitude in returning to the theme of Thanksgiving. He discusses things to be grateful to the Lord for including current domestic peace in the United States and peace between the U.S. and other countries, national "prevalence of health," national economic prosperity, and a lack of persecution for "opinion's sake.".
