Contemporary chagrin-backed marbled boards with gilt-lettered spine and raised bands, top edge sprinkled, fore- and bottom edge untrimmed, original wrappers bound in (binding slightly rubbed at extremities, wrappers repaired, some foxing on the first leaves). This work is a summary of the mathematical contributions of Pierre Fermat, authored by Émile Brassinne (1805-1884), a professor at the École d'artillerie in Toulouse. In the introduction, Brassinne discusses the unsuccessful attempt to publish Fermat's writings, a project initiated by François Arago for which the French government allocated 15,000 francs in 1843. Brassinne intended this summary, presented in French and using modern mathematical notations, to convey the elegance and finesse of Fermat's original works. The first part provides a summary of the mémoires published in Opera Varia (Toulouse, 1679). The second part is a complete summary of the six books of Diophantus' Arithmetica, accompanied by Fermat's notes (Toulouse, 1670).
