Employing metaphors in political discourse helps politicians simplify their content and make the audience understand their message more clearly, as Lakoff notes: 'Abstractions and enormously complex situations are routinely understood via metaphor' (1991: 25). Lakoff further describes the use of metaphors as something not necessarily good or bad, but rather depicts it as a stylistic device that is widely common even in everyday language.Therefore, it seems highly interesting to look even closer at how metaphors are being used in the context of war-related speech in the United States. The focus of this paper will be on metaphors used in the State of the Union Address, since I assume that the latter is perfectly suited for an exemplary analysis of how war-related metaphors are constructed and which specific purpose they serve.

Although quite a few people working in Hollywood, 'in all aspects of moviemaking, from producing to performing', are openly homosexual, the industry's main players are still reluctant to intensively approach this 'prime phobia in Hollywood' (Hilliard 9).From the first signs of homosexuality in Dickson's 'Dickson Experimental Sound film' (1895) over to the restrictive Hays Code in the 30s on to influential modern movies such as Demme's Philadelphia (1993) or Lee's Brokeback Mountain (2005), there are plenty of examples of Hollywood's varying engagement with homosexual issues.In the course of this paper, I will not only analyze the depiction of homosexuality in these movies, but also describe society's reactions to these works. Of course, there have been harsh reactions to movies presenting homosexuality not as something to be feared of. Especially Christian groups have always blamed respective movies for depicting 'deviant' behavior, as well as conservative politicians and media.

While the main approach of this paper will be of sociological nature, one cannot forgo an examination of the respective political background and events, which mostly go hand in hand and show interdependencies.Notably, related research on this field is relatively scarce. Most major works dealing with Mexican-American relations and the state of Mexicans within US society focus on specific time periods or address specific contemporary socioeconomic issues of immigration and immigrants, but rather lack a comprehensive view that might combine the different strands and lead to a widely spanning narrative about Mexican immigrants in US society.In general, I will try to develop a narrative that follows the overall course of events in Mexican-American history, which chapter two will comprise. Here, I will specifically depict the Mexican-American War as an origin of the boundaries we know today and will further provide an in-depth study on the 20th century and its waves of migration. Chapter three will look at the specific history of Mexican immigration to the United States and will then provide an overview of the contemporary situation of immigrants. Subsequently, chapter four aims to merge the findings of chapters two and three and examine contemporary literary expressions in Boyle's 'The Tortilla Curtain'. Out of the many aspects to be found within the novel, I will mainly focus on those relevant in sociological terms. Lastly, I will try to combine the paper's findings to a potential narrative and discuss the political and sociological future of Mexican-American relations.

So wurden, orientiert an fünf Situativen Aufgaben, sowohl historische Entwicklungen und Ursachen geklärt als auch die gegenwärtigen wichtigsten in Afghanistan agierenden Akteure benannt. Im nun folgenden, als Abschluss gedachten Teils der Unterrichtseinheit sollen die SuS in einem Planspiel die Perspektive verschiedener spezifischer Akteure im Afghanistankonflikt einnehmen und diese im Rahmen der fiktiven Konferenz 'Possible Ways to Stabilization in Afghanistan' argumentativ vertreten. An dieser Stelle sei auch anzumerken, dass die Konferenz in der Realität definitiv auf Englisch abgehalten werden müsste, somit soll den SuS auch der Bezug zur Rolle der englischen Sprache in einer globalisierten Welt vermittelt werden. Im sprachlichen Bereich wurde hier insbesondere auf ein themenspezifisches Vokabular zur Analysekompetenz fokussiert und es wurden etwa Grundformen semantischer Verknüpfung sowie Konnektoren für das Verfassen einer Summary und einer Analysis eingeübt. Innerhalb des letzten Blocks der Einheit soll nun auch den diskursiven Kompetenzen mehr Beachtung geschenkt werden und die SuS sollen befähigt werden, innerhalb sprachlicher Interaktion argumentativ und stilistisch angemessen ihre Meinung zu äußern sowie sich sicher innerhalb einer Diskussion aktiv und auch reagierend beteiligen zu können. Letzten Endes soll Ziel der gesamten Einheit sein, in die 'Probleme internationaler Zusammenarbeit und Friedenssicherung' einzuführen und anhand 'der Analyse eines internationalen Konflikts Orientierungswissen mit dem Ziel sachlich begründeter Urteilsbildung' (Hessisches Kultusministerium 2010b: 21) zu vermitteln. Ebenfalls sollen Lösungsmöglichkeiten erarbeitet und diskutiert werden.

Obwohl es sich bei Suchten um einen der bedeutendsten Theoretiker des frühen Paracelsismus handelt, hat er in der Forschung bisher verhältnismäßig geringe Beachtung gefunden. Die Erkundung seines theosophischen Weltbilds führt auf der Textgrundlage von 'De tribus facultatibus' und weiterer, vor allem paracelsischer Schriften über die Themenfelder von Kosmologie, Theoalchemie und Logostheologie hin zur Mystik, die in Ansätzen vom Predigtwerk Meister Eckharts, besonders aber von der 'Theologia Deutsch' inspiriert ist. Die Mystik erweist sich als Bedingung einer natürlichen und als wesentliches Element einer himmlischen Magie. Letztere entfaltet Suchten unter dem Eindruck der dionysischen Theologie. Insgesamt wirft die Studie ein neues Licht auf die geistigen Hintergründe des Paracelsismus.
