From the cover: The long 1970s have recently emerged as the start of a new epoch in which we still live. This volume asks whether the accelerated value change of these years can be explained with the rise of a new kind of post-rationalism, and presents case studies from across highly industrialized Europe. Theories of value change are tested historically in France, Italy, the two Germanies, the Soviet Union, Poland, Sweden, Spain, Greece, and Portugal. Approaching the era from long-term perspective, the chapters trace the rise of post-rational values in different fields such as social science debates, gender roles, sexuality, mass media, religiosity, humanitarianism, tourism, and nonconformist consumerism. The essays engage in controversy on whether new norms and practices that developed during the decade find their origin in post-rational values, a rise in affluence and education, or political changes. The comparison in this volume extends both geographically, across the Iron Curtain and including 'smaller' countries, and chronologically, placing the 1970s as a key decade of transformation into a continuum spanning the long twentieth century. The authors show from different perspectives how the transformations of the long 1970s were linked to the legacy of the two world wars, as well as how they were related to the 1960s, which have often been presented as the primary decade of change. Instead of focusing on the dichotomy of materialism and post-materialism advocated by Ronald Inglehart's much-discussed theory of value change, the volume considers the 1970s move towards post-rational values against the backdrop of contemporary intellectual debates on rationalism in advanced industrialized societies. The introduction of the principle of women's reproductive liberty in France, tentatively by the family planning movement after 1960 and explicitly by the women's liberation movement after 1970, marked a deep shift, transforming public discourses. Yet this principle remained fiercely contested, and moderate and conservative actors responded by foregrounding notions of 'reproductive responsibility', or the expectation that individuals perform the 'right' sexual andfamily-making behaviour, benefiting not only themselves and their families, but the nation at large. Such responsibilisation underpinned the legal reforms of the 1960s-70s, framing a notion ofreproductive citizenship based on a tension between individual rights and social norms.This book breaks new ground by taking an intersectional approach to the defining moments of this period: the legalisation of contraception (the laws of 1967 and 1974) and the liberalisation of abortion (1975, 1979). Drawing on a wide range of sources and actors - including feminist and family planning movements, government actors, demographers, medical-professional organisations,disability rights groups, and key actors in the overseas departments - Maud Bracke demonstrates how the discourse of responsibilisation allowed actors to distinguish between citizens 'worthy' of reproductiverights and those seen as less worthy. Bracke analyses the distinct regulations regarding contraception in the overseas departments of Guadeloupe and Martinique, framed by racialised anti-natalism. The book also demonstrates that disability rights organisations contributed to the discrediting of the notion of 'eugenic abortion', used among experts and policy-makers until the early 1970s. Furthermore, Bracke goes on to highlight the silence in the feminist movement around both disability rightsand race as part of its universalisation of women's conditions of oppression, and analyses the emergence of Black Feminism in late-1970s France. In so doing, the book offers a major contribution to thehistory of sex, gender, family life, healthcare, demography, and political debate in post-war France, and more generally. An excellent overall copy. Binding is solid, square, sturdy, tight. Boards are clean and firm, slight bump to the bottom corner of the back board but no other wear of note. Interior is bright and clean and free of marks except for a small, neat, gift inscription on the front free endpaper, which also has a couple of fingerprint smudges. Else interior perfect and appears unread, which makes sense since its from the collection of an eminent marxist scholar who received this as a gift but had probably studied it all quite directly over the years. Dustjacket is mostly clean and attractive, with some light bumping and wear around the edges and with one significant horizontal scratch to the back panel. DJ now in brodart.…
