Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Since the pioneering work of Donald and his first Lancet paper in 1958, the use of ultrasound in obstetrics and gynaecology has evolved rap idly. The introduction of grey scale techniques enhanced our ability to identify different tissues on the basis of their texture. However, it was the introduction of the linear array real-time scanner in the mid seven ties that changed ultrasound from being an 'eccentric art form' to a readily available and usable technique. This led to the first reports of the diagnosis of neural tube defects using ultrasound by Campbell, as well as the establishment of fetal biometry. In the midst of this activity the parallel development of the transvaginal probe by Kratochwill went almost unnoticed by most gynaecologists. Yet the application of this technique has since had a major impact on many areas of gyna ecological practice, and on infertility in particular. Since the demon stration of transvaginal follicle aspiration, the vaginal route has become standard for most invasive ultrasound guided gynaecological procedures. The relatively new technical advance of transvaginal colour Doppler may potentially have just as great an impact. The introduction and use of transvaginal colour flow imaging has facili tated the study of vascular changes within the pelvis.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Original staple-bound 3-hole punched wraps, 14x21cm. Printed under HMSO authority by Kelliher, Hudson and Kearns. iv, 34pp including 1 plan. Wraps about very good, spotted, with small area of scuffing to the top front edge, and staples rusted. Interiors very good. This is one in a series of self-contained handbooks (others covered counter-intelligence and military security, intelligence in the field etc). It is signed in the print by the War Office's Permanent Under Secretary of State Eric B.B. Speed on 26 November 1946, and was distributed to All Arms Scale B(1), and Officer Cadet Training Units (OCTUs) Scale III. It details the operation of two branches of Prisoner of War (PW) Intelligence: one to obtain information from enemy PWs and deserters (PW Intelligence (Enemy)); the other to deny information to the enemy from British PWs, escapers and evaders, and recover captured or isolated British or Allied personnel (PW Intelligence (British)). Its need was driven by experiences in WW2. The case of a Canadian PW camp for example found that attempts to convert the Germans to democracy were countered by Nazi efforts to maintain loyalty by sending care packages to their PWs, pressure from "hard-core" PWs connected to Nazi leaders, and prior "intense education", and special instructions on how to act in case of capture (Myers 2013: 239, citing this Manual). Therefore PW Intelligence (Enemy) covered here at much greater length includes principles and organisation of interrogation (distinguishing field from base, major requirements, etc); treatment of prisoners, handling (distinguishing various types of unwounded, wounded, special prisoners, and search of the dead); and evacuation (including circumstances for shoot to kill); variations in procedure from Unit to Army; the Combined Services Detailed Interrogation Centre; techniques for interrogating enemy prisoners / civilians / civilian refugees; relations with General Support Intelligence (GS(I) responsible for gathering, analysing and disseminating military intelligence); and examination and disposal of documents / captured material. PW Intelligence (British) covers tasks; troop training (in security, escape and evasion); operations by GHQ; and intelligence (on numbers, condition etc of escapers and evaders). The appendix includes a plan of an idealised divisional or corps "cage". It includes a marshalling area for identifying, sorting and counting, separate areas for prisoners interrogated / selected / not selected for interrogation, interrogation rooms or tents screened from view (further from the cage if hessian screens are not available), and administrative area. Sufficient pens are required to separate officers from NCOs and men, and "clean" (ie, available for evacuation) from "dirty" (not available for evacuation). Other appendices include specimen headings for Corps or Army Level Interrogation Reports (pretty much a terms of reference), and extracts from the Geneva Convention (1929) with a list of its signatories. Extremely rare - Worldcat highlights the Canadian connection, recording a single copy at the Canadian Museum of History and Canadian War Museum (OCLC 1232297714), and a Canadian reprint dated November 1946 at the Library and Archives Canada (OCLC 1007487170). Not recorded on Library Hub. (Ref. Adrian Myers (2013), "The Archaeology of Reform at a German Prisoner of War Camp in a Canadian National Park during the Second World War").

Original manuscript by Eric Betts comprising 191pp. of typed verse (containing 111 poems) in black and red, all with title, date and the location composed, publication details (if published), and other contextual details, with occasional ink manuscript annotations and one original pencil illustration, plus 22pp. contents/index, both typed and ink manuscript, to the front and rear. Housed in a 1930s oblong half faux-leather textured cloth binder, held with metal rods. 21 x 14cm. Signed by Betts and dated 1936 in ink to the front free endpaper. Business card for Betts loosely laid in. The binder with marking to the boards and wear to the board edges. The contents remain in very good order throughout, with just a touch of toning to page edges. A unique, fascinating, and frequently amusing collection of manuscript verse charting the entire career of the highly distinguished First World War flying ace and air reconnaissance photographer Air Vice Marshall Eric Bourne Coulter Betts CBE DSC DFC (1897-1971). Born in Dublin, Betts began his career in the Royal Naval Air Service, signing up a few days after his eighteenth birthday in 1915, during the early stages of the First World War. He went on to become a flying ace, credited with six aerial victories. These actions were, however, somewhat incidental to his more important occupation of undertaking long range photographic reconnaissance missions, documenting German naval bases and other sites, of which he was credited with more than twenty successful long range flights. For his achievements he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the French Croix de guerre with Palm, and the Distinguished Flying Cross, the citation for which praised him thus: "An observer officer of great skill who has carried out over 20 long-distance photographic reconnaissances during the past four months, and in conjunction with his pilot, has brought home about 1,000 photographs of enemy positions of inestimable value, in addition to destroying eight enemy machines". During the inter-war period, Betts held various commissions in Britain and Aden, subsequently commanding No. 101 (Bomber) Squadron RAF from December 1933, and was then was promoted to group captain, becoming the Deputy Director of War Organisation in April 1939. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he was tasked with organising the delivery of British aircraft to beleaguered Poland; however, that nation was conquered by the Germans before the aircraft could be supplied. Between September 1939 and May 1940, he worked on the creation of sixteen war planning forecasts for logistics and personnel requirements for the RAF to fight the war, which turned out to be exceptionally accurate. By March 1943, he had been promoted to Air Vice-Marshall and served the remainder of the war (from 26th March) as Air Officer in Charge of Administration, Middle East Command, receiving a CBE in June 1943, and a mention in despatches on 1st January 1945. Following the war, Betts retained his rank, retiring in 1946, and died in County Cork in 1971. A typed note by Betts to the title page of the present work explains that "The original rhymes were lost in the Battle of Britain; this is an attempt to reconstruct them from various publications in which some of them have appeared - "Flying", "The Aeroplane", "The R.A.F. Quarterly", "The Hawk" and some local magazines -, from copies given to friends and from memory." Almost entirely written in the period 1915-1945, with locations including Dunkirk (1916), H.M.S. Pegasus (1920), Aden (1930-32), Air Ministry, London (1937-39), and Cairo (1942-1944), amongst others, Betts's verse provide a satirical take on his experiences in the R.A.F. throughout both world wars, focussing predominantly on airforce life (including specific flying incidents), the political and military situations to which he was witness, and people and places he encountered, as well as occasional forays into the slightly more fanciful. Betts often provides significant contextual information, his entries often either reflecting specific elements of a character's experience in the airforce, or else are written in reaction to political/global events. He also frequently supplies more personal, particular contexts for his wry rhymes, for example, his six-page "An Aden Alphabet" is noted as being "based on the experience of Squadron Leader J. L. Vachell when he flew over from Aden, where he was commanding No. 8 (B) Squadron, to make arrangements for R.A.F. participation in the forthcoming coronation ceremonies of Ras Tafari, The Lion of Judah, the King of Kings, Emperor of Ethiopia", whilst "The Gremlin" is "based on an episode when landing late one evening at Sharjah, in the Persian Gulf, in a Bisley". An unusual insight into the experiences of a noted flying ace in Europe and the Middle East during both World Wars. Betts's papers are held by the Imperial War Museum, London.
