AND QUEEN ANNE, IN FORCE AND USE. BEGUN BY JOSEPH WASHINGTON OF THE MIDDLE TEMPLE, ESQ; AND SINCE HIS DEATH REVISED AND CONTINUED BY HENRY BOULT OF GRAYS-INN, ESQ; TO THE DISSOLUTION OF… THE FIRST PARLIAMENT OF GREAT BRITAIN, APRIL THE 15TH. 1708. IN TWO VOLUMES, WITH TWO NEW TABLES. VOL. I. [114], 415 pages. Hardcover: H 19.75cm x L 12.5cm. Contemporary full calf leather binding; strong rubbing/scuffing to boards with old ink writing on detached front board; dulled/worn gilt tooling along board edges with corners particularly worn; spine with five raised bands with both ends chipped and worn fairly even with their respective text block edges; old remnant tape strips and removal impressions on spine and front board; no evidence of a spine title label ever being present. Past owner's ink signature with 1850 date on front pastedown; blank prelims missing as first leaf present is creased title which has two areas near top clipped out (probably a removal of past owner's name); antiquarian ink signature "Nathe. Blagrove" at top of title page; toning/foxing throughout; stubs of missing rear flyleaf and rear free endpaper present. Slender splitting along rear joint but hinge is firm; text block binding remains solid. Via a handwriting sample found online, the aforementioned title page signature matches that of Nathaniel Blagrove who was appointed judge in the Bristol County [Massachusetts] Court of Common Pleas from 1723-1724 and who more enjoyed more extensive judicial service as Judge of Probate and Insolvency for Bristol County from 1733-1747.

Manuscript records from one of the world's oldest architectural societies containing hundreds of signatures of leading members including the architect of the Walker Art Gallery. Quarto manuscript book, half green morocco over marbled boards, stationer's ticket of 'Joseph A D Watts. Liverpool' on marbled front endpaper with detai…ls for reordering. Red morocco label to upper board: 'Architectural Society - Council Minute Book'. Manuscript title page on verso of first flyleaf followed by minutes in several hands, always signed off by a senior member of the society, including dozens of signatures from all of Francis Horner; Thomas Kilpin; Henry Hill Vale (responsible for Walker Art Gallery) Thomas D Barry; Joseph Boult; Henry Sumners (partner Culshaw and Sumners), Charles Aldridge etc. The Society was founded in 1847 so this is probably the second minute book to record the Society's meetings at the Liverpool Royal Institution (most of the rest of the Society's records are in the Liverpool Archive). These minutes reveal a fascinating range of activities that include early interventions into conservation issues such as the proposed demolition of the Dome on the Custom House. Discussion of this issue is recorded in the minutes of 1878 with a copied letter from James Allanson Picton apparently resolving the controversy: ' I brought the subject of the Dome of the Custom House before the Finance Committee, as a deputation was going to London. an interview with the Chief Commissioner of Works. I do not think there is much fear of the Dome coming down. J A Picton' (May 23 1878). Picton subsequently received an 'illuminated address' in recognition of services. The Society was involved in lobbying over proposed changes to the Building Act and By-laws; there was much concern with testing building materials and a possible change of name to the Architects' Society only as well as plans for excursions to Chatsworth and Buxton. The Society provided detailed feedback to an invitation to consult with RIBA about 'a General code of Building Regulations' (1876) and even bought a 'black leather bag for the conveyance of Minute Books' - this very volume. There is evidence of some fraternal competitiveness with their equivalent society in Manchester and sponsorship of the competition to design the Wirral Children's Hospital (May 1881). The Society seems to have been assiduous in support of student architects with regular Student Drawing competitions including one of a church in Hope Street.
