Ellis, Edward S. [Edward Sylvester Ellis (April 11, 1840 - June 20, 1916) was an American author who was born in Ohio and died at Cliff Island, Maine. A teacher, school administrator, journalist, and the author of hundreds of books and magazine articles that he produced by his name and by a number of noms de plume. This issue features a marvelous wraparound color illustration by Ernest Born of the city of San Francisco overlooking the bay including ships, hills in the distance and Alcatraz Island in all it's glory. Ernest Born (1888-1992) graduated from University of California, Berkeley's Sc…hool of Architecture in 1922, earning his master's degree the following year. An accomplished artist as well as architect, Born's designs include exhibits, murals, furniture, showrooms, book design, painting in oils and watercolor, and creating illustrations and art prints. Born participated in the design of the Glen Park BART station and drafted the signs for 33 BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) stations. Known for his creative and technical skills he rendered drawings for other firms and devoted a decade to the design and illustrations of the book the Plan of St. Gall with author Walter Horn. In addition to maintaining an architecture and design office, Born was a professor in the UC Berkeley School of Architecture. Uncommon.
