Paperback. Condition: New. For the first three quarters of the twentieth century, in the heart of our nation, there thrived a safe haven which nurtured great aspirations of thousands of African American youth and their families. "The Sumner Story" highlights the history of a segregated high school which became recognized for the… stellar academic performance of its students. Highly qualified faculty who believed in the students' ability to achieve prepared them for a world of competition, hard knocks, compromises and closed doors. The story also denotes and illuminates outstanding career successes of alumni. In a socially and economically segregated nation, black students who had a "Sumner-like" experience were very fortunate because their schools served as clear windows and powerful springboards to promising possibilities. In this regard, nine other segregated high schools are reviewed. Insights can be gained from this story on how to resolve the plight of low-performing schools in socially and economically disadvantaged communities.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Hardcover. This book was published in 1952, based on the author's visit to Sicily in 1950, shortly after World War II. According to the dust jacket, the author wanted to help correct the impression that Sicily was just a mass of rubble after the war. He points out that very few works of antiquity… or historical importance were touched during the war. Bonner first spent a winter in Sicily prior to World War I, when he became interested in Sicily's people, myths, legends, and history. This book is not a travel guide, but a compilation of travel sketches, a postwar description of locales, and personal reminiscences of earlier visits. Quarto. 193 pages, including index. Sicilian maps on front and rear pastedowns and free endpapers. Black dust jacket with title in green to front and spine panels, and photo of Mount Etna on front panel. Price-clipped. Travel. TRA210231.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Boards are light grey with gilt lettering on the spine and front. Very minimal bumps and scuffs, with a section at the top right where the jacket has a tear that has slight colour tanning. Pages are mainly all clean, with black and white pictorial illustr…ations. The pages are in a very good condition, apart from a few which have slight spotting. This doesn't affect the writing on those pages. Jacket has a tear which is a quarter down the page on the right of the front cover. The remainder of the jacket has some spotting, a few scuffs and age tanning. The overall condition of this book is very good, despite the loss on the front of the jacket, and slight colour change on the boards.
