This volume presents the first English translation of Harald Ingholt's seminal work Studier over Palmyrensk Skulptur, together with a number of studies that contextualize this important volume in the light of current research. Almost a century after its publication in 1928, Ingholt's ground-breaking Danish-language monograph remains essential reading for all scholars of Palmyrene archaeology and iconography, setting out observations on the typology and style of securely dated Palmyrene portraits, and establishing a stylistic and chronological sequence that remains in use today. Included alongside the translation of Ingholt's writings are contributions by leading scholars in the field who seek to introduce Harald Ingholt and explore the impact of his work in Palmyra, as well as presenting a survey of all the portraits from Palmyra that can be securely dated by inscription. The translation and commentary have been realized as part of the Palmyra Portrait Project, directed by Prof. Rubina Raja. Harald Ingholt was a Danish archaeologist. He excavated primarily in Syria, first in Palmyra, and then Hama, however, his research interests expanded to include regions that were either in direct contact with Syria (such as the art of Hatra), or further away (such as Gandhara), making him one of the pre-eminent experts in the art of the Near and Middle East. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. The Oxford Handbook of Digital Classical Studies offers three distinct views: (1) an expansive approach to classical studies, which encompasses sub-disciplines that are usually treated separately, such as archaeology and philology; (2) concise overviews of the various digital tools, methods, and approaches currently in use; and (3) an exploration of their uses in and beyond academia, taking in research, pedagogy and heritage. As well as giving a sense of what is nowpossible, the handbook places digital technology within a theoretical framework that examines its use critically, advocates for ethical practices in the production and management of data, andconsiders its impact on the material and digital world. The handbook is divided into four sections that: sketch out the historiography of the field and articulate the impact that the digital turn has had on classical studies (Section II: Contexts); explore the importance that digitization and data management plays in shaping the field (Section III: Data); provide concise and up-to-date introductions to new digital methods and approaches (Section IV: Methods); and present aselection of case studies that exemplify how these can be used in various sectors as a source of inspiration for readers (Section V: Case Studies).
