Manuscript. Condition: Good. On offer is an original manuscript letter handwritten by Henri Georges Stephane Adolphe Opper de Blowitz [1825-1903] the noted Bohemian journalist. He was born to a Jewish family at Blovice [Blowitz] in Bohemia, and left home at the age of fifteen to travel, acquiring a wide range of languages in the process. He became famous, both as a journalist and for his insights into diplomacy. In 1875, the Duc de Decazes, the Minister of Foreign Affairs , informed him of a confidential dispatch from the French ambassador to Berlin, discussing German plans to attack France, and requested Blowitz publish an exposé; he did so, provoking a storm of public opinion, and effectively preventing any chance of the German intention being carried out. In 1877 and 1888 he successfully exposed internal conspiracies against the Republic. His most famous achievement was in 1878, when he managed to obtain the text of the Treaty of Berlin and publish it at the very moment that the Congress of Berlin was finally signing it. Dated 1893, 2 pp. 4 x 6 inches. This letter is addressed to Mr. [Harry H.] McClure who was the man noted for first bringing Willa Cather's writings to his cousin's attention after she had been repeatedly rejected by the editors of McClure's. He left his position of managing editor during the mass resignations in 1906 and joined the staff of American Magazine with the other former McClure employees. Blowitz says he was surprised to see the advertisement for the publication of his article intended for your American Review. Light staining at the slight split in the fold, otherwise G.
