Diplômé de l?Ecole Boulle et de l?ENSAD, HENRI QUILLE (1928-2020), passionné par Le Corbusier et le Modulor, s?installe sur l?île de Formentera (Baléares) en 1972. Il y construit pour une clientèle principalement internationale 30 maisons d?une grande cohérence et s?inscrit tant dans des principes issus de savoir-faire vernacula…ire que dans ceux des grands maîtres de la modernité. Il dit « poursuivre » l?architecture locale, notamment en faisant largement usage de la voûte catalane, réduisant les ouvertures pour se protéger de la chaleur, recouvrant les murs extérieurs d?un enduit fait de chaux et de sable. Précurseur de l?habitat écologique, il élèvera une dizaine de maisons autosuffisantes. Avec les architectes Felix Julbe et Raimon Torres, il collabore au plan régulateur et aux travaux de planification de l?île de Formentera de 1973 à 1976. Marqué par ses études à l?Ecole Boulle, il dessine tables, chaises, bureaux, canapés, le tout en bois exotique, qu?il fait réaliser sur place par un menuisier/ébéniste qu?il forme à cet effet, et dont il meuble ses maisons. Mêlant plans, photographies d?époque et prises de vue contemporaines, cet ouvrage permet de redonner à cet architecte et à ses maisons leur juste place dans l?histoire de l?architecture du XXe siècle.

The living environment was transformed into a waking dream in which luxurious furniture in original materials and surprising objects were mixed, associated, for the first time, with early furniture. The end of the 1970s marked the advent of a period in which beauty and classic elegance gave way to a host of expressions that were unclassifiable and rejected any hierarchy. The postmodern period had arrived.
