It is a ready reference to myths and legends, gods and goddesses, leaders and battles, places and dates as well as identifying top mid-20th century scholars and reflecting then known archaeol…ogical findings. xxi + 319pp. Sir William Smith (1813-1893) was an English lexicographer. Smith published the first of several school dictionaries in 1850, and in 1853 began the Principia series, which marked an advance in the teaching of Greek and Latin. Then came the Student's Manuals of History and Literature, of which the English literature volume went into 13 editions. Edward Henry Blakeney (1869-1955) was an English educator, classical scholar and poet. As well as several volumes of poetry, he published editions and translations of classical Latin and Greek texts. John Warrington has little or no biographic information available. It appears he provided many translations for the Every Man's Classics Paperback series. Since both Smith and Blakeney were dead long before this book was published in 1958, Warrington and E. P. Dutton editors were responsible to bring this book to completion. Paperback book is remarkably well preserved and has been carefully stored and used. No defined reading creases, interior is tight, clean and unmarked. Copyright 1958. Printed in U.S.A. Almost certainly written by Montagu Barstow, Baroness Orczy's husband and thus almost certainly contains much by Orczy herself. First issue with 32 page… Spring 1935 publishers advertisements at rear. Slight mottling at edges of boards, otherwise very good in very good indeed dust jacket with slight nick at top of the njacket's rear spine fold. Presents very well. No inscriptions, not price-clipped. Decent copy. Front panel of jacket in good order showing a full length portrait of Blakeney, holding a thin cane and lorgnette monocle.

Foreword by Baroness Orczy. Publisher's plum-coloured cloth with gilt lettering to the spine. The book is integrally in fine condition, with a very strong unre…ad feeling to the spine. The pages are clean and bright throughout. Very minor cocking to the book and some foxing to the outer text block. Page 279 has a crease at the top right hand corner. Overall the book is in near fine condition. The Spring 1935 Catalogue at the back is evidence of the first issue. The D/W is also in near fine condition with one very short tear and a touch of creasing at the very top of the spine. One reason the D/W seems to have survived so well is that it is of a thick high quality paper. The identity of "John Blakeney" has been the subject of speculation. Elsewhere on the www it is argued that John Blakeney is the pen-name of Baroness Orczy's son. Others postulate that Baroness Orczy wrote the book herself pretending to be her son or husband using a pseudonym. A very nice copy indeed of a rare First Edition.
