Add to baskethardcover. Condition: Good. Publication: London, Nuttall, Fisher, and Dixon, n.d. [c. 1800â"1815] Formatting: 8vo, pagination unverified, untrimmed text block. Condition Report: Good. The volume has been sensibly but plainly rebound in grey-blue paper over boards, presenting a tight, secure structure devoid of external embellish…ment. The text block remains entirely untrimmed, preserving its original rough-cut edges which display expected age-toning and moderate dust-soiling. Internally, the binding holds firm, though the preliminary leaves, including the frontispiece and title page, exhibit significant damp staining and prominent tide marks primarily localised to the lower gutter and margins. Intermittent foxing and scattered spotting are present throughout the text block, commensurate with the paper stock and provincial production of this era, yet the structural integrity remains uncompromised and the text is fully legible. Catalogue Note: This "Stereotype Edition" compiles Edward Youngâs profoundly influential blank-verse meditation alongside Robert Blairâs The Grave and supplementary verses, effectively gathering the period's most popular "Graveyard School" poetry into a single, accessible volume. The text is accompanied by an engraved frontispiece portrait of Young and several internal engraved plates executed by notable period craftsmen (including Neagle, Cooke, and J. Palmer), representing a solid example of nineteenth-century provincial illustration. The copy bears modest but interesting provenance markers, including early ownership signatures ("J. Burman" and what appears to be "John Forster") on the preliminary leaves. Having been rebound functionally in plain paper boards, the book stands as an authentic, unsophisticated survival of a heavily read printing. Such stereotyped editions, while historically printed in enormous numbers to satisfy the sweeping middle-class appetite for pietistic literature, are surprisingly scarce on the open market today in any condition, as they were overwhelmingly read to pieces rather than preserved in formal libraries. A quintessential cornerstone of the eighteenth-century "Graveyard School" of poetry, Edward Young's Night Thoughts was a spectacular literary success that defined the mood of Christian melancholia for generations. Written in profound grief following a succession of personal losses, this expansive blank-verse epic explores the transient nature of life, the inevitability of death, and the hope of immortality. This compilation also features Robert Blair's similarly influential poem The Grave, alongside other contemporary elegiac works, offering a comprehensive immersion into the era's fascination with mortality, mourning, and spiritual redemption. W.M. Craig; Cooke; Neagle; J. Palmer; J. James; J. Dudley; J. Taylor (illustrator).
