Hardback. Condition: Good. Historical criticism generally has viewed Jeremiah and other prophetic books as anthologies of nonrelated oracles and prose materials. Recent literary-critical analysis sees the same materials as fictive literary products, thus ignoring the composite nature of prophetic literature in favor of a strategy of reading which threatens to force homogeneity on that literature. In contrast, Biddle proposes a method of reading that listens to the voices and characterizations as defined and presented in the text as we have it. The complex history of Jeremiah, for example, should not be reduced to an anthology of unrelated oracles or to a single text produced by a fictive author. In comparison to newer literary theory, Biddle explains, the method proposed here resembles the task of the sophisticated concertgoer who hears not only the sound of the orchestra, but the voices of the different instruments and the various melodies, counter-melodies, and harmonies contributing to the whole. (This method) reflects an interest in developing something of a new harmonic theory of prophetic literature. Some such theory and method is necessary because prophetic music is symphonically complex. Historical-critical and literary-critical readers can recognize only plainsong. Biddle proposes to listen to the full symphonic polyphony of the prophetic voices.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. A Time to Laugh draws on Mark Biddle's command of Hebrew language and cultural subtleties to explore the ways humor was intentionally incorporated into Scripture. With characteristic liveliness, Biddle guides the reader through the stories of six biblical characters who did rather unexpected things. Biddle offers the reverence due the Scriptures and provides a fresh focus on their depth in such a way that readers can learn to get the joke on their own. A Time to Laugh is a winning, scholarly, funny book, not necessarily because Biddle himself is funny (although he is), but because faithful ancient writers recognized the comic in what God ordained and in how God's people behaved in response.A native of Ft. Payne, Alabama, and educated in the public schools of Orange County, Florida, and Dekalb County, Alabama, Mark E. Biddle holds degrees from Samford University, the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Rueschlikon Baptist Theological Seminary, and the University of Zurich. In addition to editing the Reading the Old Testament series, he is the author of Deuteronomy in the Smyth & Helwys Bible Commentary series.…

Hardback. Condition: Good. Gunkel's commentary on Genesis is a classic in the field of Old Testament studies. This translation makes it available in English for the first time. Gunkel's familiarity with the religious and folk literatures of the world especially of the ancient Near East, provides the context into which he sought to situate Israelite religion and literature. Although he employed source- and form-critical methods, he brought a fine literary and cultural sensitivity to bear on the question of the interpretation of the text in its final forms. In fact, many who now criticize late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century scholarship for its atomism and aridity (Gunkel himself, expressed an awareness of these dangers) will be surprised to find Gunkel's literary reading of Genesis and his engagement with the text inferior to none based on modern approaches. Many of the critical issues with which Gunkel grappled in his commentary continue to commend the attention of Genesis scholarship: the nature of patriarchal religion, the interrelationship between documentary sources, oral tradition, and editorial activity, the antiquity of Israel's eschatological hope, and much more.…

Hardback. Condition: Good. Deuteronomy, the last and widely considered the most influential of the five books of the Pentateuch, preserves the three addresses Moses delivered to the people of Israel just prior to his death and their entry into the promised land. Its name, which means second law, represented a reiteration, explication, and, to a degree, expansion, of the sole covenant between God and Israel. It was a reinterpretation of the law designed to meet the needs of a new generation facing a new future. In this volume of the groundbreaking Smyth & Helwys Bible Commentary series, Old Testament scholar Mark Biddle skillfully leads his readers to consider how these words which have often confounded the casual reader can help us understand and meet the needs of our own generation as well. …
