Seller: Mike Park Ltd, London, United Kingdom
Paperback. Condition: New. NEW. Well illustrated with 45 colour plates, 12mo, pp 123, paperback, a very good copy. Postage will be reduced on this book. [An excellent little guide. This is a condensed version of Bertram E. Smythies' Birds of Borneo which at present is the only comprehensive guide to Bornean birds. This pocketbook guide, a great help in the field, contains the original plates painted by Commander A.M. Hughes using new transparencies and colour separations giving a more faithful representation of the originals. Most of the information is from the third edition of The Birds of Borneo with some additional material drawn from other published sources. Many bird observers will find this book extremely useful.

Hardcover. Condition: VG+. No Jacket. A M Hughes (illustrator). Third. "The Birds of Borneo" was first published in 1960 with a second edition in 1968. This third edition of 1981 was produced with a "somewhat radical revision of the text", which had been updated for the second edition when pagination increased from 403 to 429 pages. The third edition was further extended to 473 pages and also contains amendments suggested by the original author plus technical updating from a number of ornithological sources. All types, from sea birds and waders to rare species are described in text and illustration. This excellent publication is enhanced by 47 colour art plates by Commander A M Hughes, including a tipped-in frontis depicting a rhinoceros hornbill. Typically, the plates show about 10 birds per page on a white background, while several are full page representations of a number of birds in their natural habitat, also colour folded map at back, two pages b/w drawings. This important publication was a joint venture of the the Sabah Society and the Malayan Nature Society, both organisations dedicated to promoting public interest in the natural history of the region. Third edition of 1981, revised by the Earl of Cranbrook, 473 pages including illustrated topography/terminology of plumage, glossary, place names guide, bibliography, Malay and Iban names, index of English and scientifice names, many colour art illustrations. VG+ colour art hard covers repeat the rhinoceros hornbill frontis with small fade marks top front corner, internally excellent, no inscriptions. (Occasional small and unobtrusive margin marks on page opposite plates.) This heavy book weighs just over 1.3kgs unpacked and could require additional postage for international delivery.
