Tous de…ux font une très large place à la volonté d'exactitude et, simultanément, investissent la représentation de ces paysages de leur intériorité.C'est cette concordance qui est ici illustrée, dans un dialogue au fil duquel apparaissent des proximités et se déploie un jeu de nuances d'autant plus sensible que dessins et écrits réunis pour cette exposition et ce catalogue traitent des mêmes paysages, italiens surtout, mais aussi allemands ou suisses ou encore de Bohême.Quarante-six oeuvres de Goethe et quatre de Tischbein ont été choisies par le Professeur Hermann Mildenberger, directeur de la collection des dessins de la Fondation Weimarer Klassik.On peut à leur sujet parler d'une exposition inédite, car elles ont fait, il y a une vingtaine d'années, l'objet d'une soigneuse restauration et n'ont pour la très grande majorité d'entre elles pas été présentées depuis. Éclairée par deux essais rédigés par M. Mildenberger, cette présentation est complétée par une chronologie croisée des voyages de Chateaubriand et de Goethe, et par un choix d'extraits de l'oeuvre de Chateaubriand, qui se rapportent aux mêmes vues qu'a dessinées Goethe.
