Au cours de sa mission, il exécuta un album de 68 plans…, dessins et aquarelles, qu'il remit à Lesseps, qui, par la suite, l'offrit à Napoléon III. Cet album aurait été détruit dans l'incendie du palais des Tuileries, sous la Commune en 1871. in-12°.

[6]-289-[1]pp. + in-fine une grande carte couleur dépliante sur papier fort de l'Isthme de Suez. Reliure demi-toile verte à coins à la Bradel (dos lisse or…né d'une large et longue pièce de titre en cuir, coin supérieur orné d'un motif doré à chaud représentant Estampes-le-Chastel, couvertures d'origine conservées, rares rousseurs). Très bon état. Format 12,4 x 19,2 cm. À partir de 1847, Narcisse Berchère (1819-1891), peintre orientaliste originaire d'Etampes, descend vers le Midi, en Espagne et au Moyen-Orient où sa palette s'éclaircit et s'enrichit. Entre 1849 et 1850 il visite l'Egypte, la Syrie, l'Asie Mineure, la Turquie, la Grèce, et Venise. Le désert le fascine, il a désormais trouvé sa voie de peintre orientaliste. En 1856, il passe deux mois dans le Sinaï avec Léon Belly puis visite la Basse-Egypte avec ses amis le peintre Jean-Léon Gérôme et le sculpteur Bartholdi. En 1860, Ferdinand de Lesseps le choisit comme dessinateur officiel de la Compagnie du Canal de Suez. Il reste 6 mois sur place et en profite pour faire de nouvelles excursions dans ce désert qu'il affectionne tant, et pour admirer et croquer la région environnante. En 1863, il publie ses souvenirs sous forme de lettres à son grand ami, Eugène Fromentin, à qui il dédie son livre, "Le Désert de Suez", cinq mois dans l'isthme. [ Hage Chahine, 435 ]. Signé par l'auteur.
