His surgical contributions involved treatment of fractures, staphylorrhaphy (surgical repair of a cleft palate), continuous wound irrigation, etc. He was co-author of the highly acclaimed Compendiu…m de chirurgie pratique, of which only part of the work had been issued prior to Bérard's death. Exemplaire renfermant une coupure de presse sur le sujet : GERDY : Opération… de staphyloraphie par un nouveau procédé, Gazette des Hôpitaux, 1848, 491-492 (cf. Zeis index 1724). Cet article de Bérard occupe les pages 538-549 de ce volume (qui commence à l'article Sabine et s'achève à l'article Submersion) et qui fait partie de la seconde édition du Dictionnaire de Médecine (1832-1846). Il constitue un exposé bien documenté des connaissances de l'époque sur la staphylorrhaphie (qui avait été introduit dans la pratique chirurgicale dans les années 1820), avec les dernières modifications proposées depuis la première publication de Roux. /// A SMALL, EARLY AND WELL DOCUMENTED MONOGRAPH ON STAPHYLORRAPHY (copy containing A NEWSPAPER CLIPPING on the subject). /// Après des généralités et un rappel historique, Bérard expose les indications et contre-indications, les recommandations pré-opératoires, les modifications principales apportées à chacun des 3 temps de l'intervention (avivement, passage des fils, noeuds), le manuel opératoire, les accidents, l'uranoplastie. Le procédé opératoire et ses variantes selon les auteurs sont bien exposés. On trouve in fine une courte bibliographie (7 auteurs cités, dont bien sûr Roux, Stephenson, von Graefe et Dieffenbach). Auguste Bérard (1802-1846) fut professeur de clinique chirurgicale à la Faculté de médecine de Paris, médecin consultant de Louis-Philippe, membre de l'Académie de médecine. Sa publication la plus célèbre est sa thèse de concours (1841) sur les Maladies de la glande parotide et de la région parotidienne. Opérations que ces maladies réclament (Garrison & Morton, 3444). Bérard est cité 13 fois dans The Zeis index. Il avait déjà fait paraître un mémoire sur la staphylorraphie dans les Archives générales de médecine en 1834 (Zeis index, 1553).
