12mo, 2 pp.Twenty-six lines. Text clear and complete. Fair, on aged paper, with strip of paper mount still adhering at head of second page (not affecting text). Presumably addressed to one of the contributors to 'Cambridge Essays on Education' (1917), which Benson edited, although none of the contributors corresponds to 'Sir John'. Benson is grateful for the essay, which will make 'a most useful & interesting contribution to our book'. He is grateful for 'the latitude of correction you allow me; but I have no doubt that any further modification will be unnecessary - you shall see a paper proof'. In a postscript he comments on 'the difficulty of adjusting the written & the spoken word - legenda & audienda!'.…

Hardback. Condition: Good. NO. First. "ARTHUR CHRISTOPHER BENSON displays both distinction and suavity in "Memories and Friends." Here in eighteen chapters, each one based upon the personality of some man or woman who has played a greater or smaller part in Benson's life, may be discovered almost a crystallization of that gentleness of demeanor, that "muscular Christianity," that innate conservatism that characterizes the later Victorian" NY Times. Extremely rare edition, with interesting newspaper cuts glued to the back of the plates, book related articles, obituaries. Good overall condition with foxing to pages, rubbing to covers, name to first blank page with a christmas card glued. Some writing to back of pages, it doesn't affect text. Very interesting book with prior owner's personal touches added. NO Dust JAcket. U5B36.…

Presentation copy inscribed by Benson to 'J.N.D. from the author ACB July 1892 No. 80/200'. J.N.D. seems certain to be John Neale Dalton (1839-1901) for whom he served as best man in 1886. Benson wrote in his diary of the older man that "Dalton showed me much fatherly kindness" while Dalton described Benson as "an object of adoration". Published at Eton while Benson was teaching there, this is copy number 80 of the 200 printed on Benson's behalf by George New. The colour yellow became associated with the decadent and aesthetic movement of the 1890s, through the efforts of Oscar Wilde and latterly the Yellow Book. As Mrs Cheveley puts it in Wilde's 'An Ideal Husband','"I have never read a Blue Book. I prefer books. in a yellow cover." The yellow card binding of this first edition is largely intact, lacking a triangle from the top corner of the lower cover. Internally the book is in very good condition and mostly unopened - despite the close friendship, Dalton did not read his pal's book. It collates complete: [4] pp 5-99 [100]. A C Benson (1862-1925) went on to become Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge, and left behind a 5 million word diary.
