Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a study into the calculation of stress distribution in curved structural members and flexible beams. It builds on previous theories and mathematical formulae to expand on the work of Winkler and Bach, extending their investigations into the effects of curvature on stress and strain. The author provides a detailed examination of analytical and graphical methods to determine correction factors for use with ordinary flexure formulae, creating a practical method of designing curved flexural members. By using case studies and numerical examples, the author provides clear and accessible explanations of complex mathematical concepts, making this book an invaluable resource for researchers, engineers, and designers working with curved structures. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the geology of a district in Argyllshire, Scotland, formed over millions of years by the metamorphosis of sedimentary rocks. The forces of intense heat and pressure have shaped the region, creating a landscape characterised by parallel ridges and hollows, with elevated quartzite outcrops forming distinctive landmarks. The author meticulously describes the geological formations, weaving together insights from field observations, petrology, and structural analysis. The book delves into the complex history of the region, revealing multiple episodes of folding, faulting, and metamorphism. It also examines the region's economic resources and the influence of geological features on human activities, highlighting the interplay between geology and human society. Through its detailed investigation, this book contributes to our understanding of the geological processes that have shaped the Scottish Highlands and provides valuable insights for further research in metamorphic geology. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Hardback. Condition: New. An important book, presenting the latest insights by the leading world authorities on naval history. This book presents a wide range of new research on many aspects of naval strategy in the early modern and modern periods. Among the themes covered are the problems of naval manpower, the nature of naval leadership and naval officers, intelligence, naval training and education, and strategic thinking and planning. The book is notable for giving extensive consideration to navies other than those of Britain, its empire and the United States. It explores a number of fascinating subjects including how financial difficulties frustrated the attempts by Louis XIV's ministers to build a strong navy; how the absence of centralised power in the Dutch Republic had important consequences for Dutch naval power; how Hitler's relationship with his admirals severely affected German naval strategy during the Second World War; and many more besides. The book is a Festschrift in honour of John B. Hattendorf, for more than thirty years Ernest J. King Professor of Maritime History at the US Naval War College and an influential figure in naval affairs worldwide. N.A.M. Rodger is Senior Research Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford. J.
