Nel volume una scelta degli scritti dedicati al tema principale di tutta la vita di scrittore di Silvio Benco: Trieste. La Trieste di tutti… i tempi ma in particolar modo quella che fiorì e si sviluppò, pur tra momenti difficili e drammatici, tra Ottocento e Novecento. Il volume inizia con un breve profilo storico di Trieste nella seconda metà dell'Ottocento. Dopo la storia, le figure ed i paesaggi, pur sempre, le une e gli altri, legati alla storia. In questo ambito si inquadrano lo scritto in cui Silvio Benco descrive le tre vie per arrivare a Trieste all'inizio del secolo, alcune (bellissime) pagine dedicate al Carso di primavera ed il delizioso ritratto di una fanciulla con cestello in mano. Il libro prosegue con un'ampia antologia dal volume Gli ultimi anni della dominazione austriaca a Trieste (alcune di queste pagine per la loro bellezza ed umanità possono ricordare addirittura Tucidide e Manzoni). Si passa poi ad un acuto panorama della Vita sociale a Trieste negli anni '20. Le pagine che seguono riguardano la nascita e la formazione di due importanti istituzioni triestine ossia La guardia medica e La società ginnastica triestina. Alcune accurate pagine sono dedicate ad una terza istituzione cioè alla banca. Il capitolo si intitola Origini della banca a Trieste. Anche la nascita del più famoso giornale triestino Il piccolo, ha, nel libro, il suo doveroso spazio. L'ultima parte è costituita da una scelta di profili e ricordi dedicati a pittori, scrittori e musicisti (e fra questi ve ne sono alcuni famosi come Slataper, Svevo, Joyce, Saba, Smareglia) che vissero ed operarono, almeno in parte, appunto a Trieste tra Ottocento e Novecento. Ma altri luoghi e momenti sono descritti o ricordati nel libro. Libro insieme di storia, di testimonianza e di poesia. Con uno scritto di Giani Stuparich.
