Add to basketHard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Dust jacket unclipped. Black cloth with bright gilt titling on spine. No inscription. 307 pages clean and tight. Between Jerusalem and Babylon, between Athens and Atlantis - the symbolic good and evil cities of the philosophers - lies the third ci…ty, which is `real life'. Since the Renaissance, Western philosophy has been ruined by two-dimensional thinking: its exponents have invented `practical' utopias according to their own tastes. But wiser thinkers have always known that perfection is to be found within the third city itself. Plato's dialogues were designed to trigger this perception in his readers or hearers, and not to describe city-states he would have liked to construct in Greece. Borna Bebek argues that, if we are to penetrate the real nature of the communities in which we live, we must follow the dialectical method of doing philosophy, in opposition to the sophists and positivists of all ages. A philosopher should grasp `aspects' of the world, without reducing these to the level of mutually exclusive `concepts': this task is vital to the health of society, but modern philosophy has largely failed to perform it, and has systematically misunderstood the writings of those who did - it has treated the three cities as if they were mutually independent, and divorced theory from praxis. To revive the spirit of true philosophy, it may be necessary to look beyond the academic confines of the subject. Avoiding the false extremes of idealism and materialism, we must allow ethics once more to merge with epistemology. The Third City is both an exposition and a demonstration of this ethically based philosophy. It allows the Platonic dialogues to cast a new light on modern physics, economics and politics - from the nature of space-time to the problems of national defence - and it examines the mythological themes common to Christian, Muslim, Zoroastrian, Hindu and Taoist scriptures. Only such a realistic application of eternal dialectic can break philosophers free of their ivory tower, to deal at last with the burning issues of our time. Size: 8vo.
