Klaus Schwab, der Gründer des World Economic Forum, sieht den heutigen Stand der Entwicklung als 'Stakeholder Kapitalismus'. Larry Fink - der CEO des weltgrößten Vermögensverwalters Blackrock - geht noch einen Schritt weiter und fordert, dass Unternehmen generell einen gesellschaftlichen Beitrag leisten sollen. Viele Unternehmen weltweit folgen dieser Aufforderung und legen für sich einen 'Purpose' in diesem Sinne fest. Purpose geht über Corporate Social Responsibilty hinaus und definiert gewissermaßen den übergeordneten Sinn aller unternehmerischen Aktivitäten. Was bedeutet dies heute für die Steuerung eines Unternehmens Wir meinen, dass hier eine doppelte Herausforderung besteht: Einerseits muss das Unternehmen in einer komplexen Welt Kurs halten, andererseits ist der Kompass dazu mehrdimensional geworden. In der früheren - eher stabilen - Umwelt war der finanzielle Gewinn die alleinige Orientierungsgröße. Heute ist unter Beachtung von Stakeholder-Interessen eine 'triple bottom line' (Ökonomie, Ökologie und Soziales) festzulegen. Übergeordnet zu diesen finanziellen und nichtfinanziellen Organisationszielen ist der Unternehmenszweck.
