Der neue Umgang mit Bildern im ausgehenden 16. und 17. Jahrhundert, der sich in Stil, Ikonographie, Frömmigkeitsverständnis und perspektivischem Illusionismus ausdrückte, war verbunden mit einer 'Vision' von Gesellschaft. Posttridentinische Theologen entwickelten eine utilitaristische, politisch wirksame und medienhistorisch relevante ästhetische Konzeption der Bildtheorie, bei der der Betrachter ins Zentrum gelangte. Eine Weiterentwicklung dieses römischen Modells stellte die Herrschafts- und Frömmigkeitspraxis der Habsburger dar. In Breslau vollzogen sie mit Hilfe der Jesuiten Inszenierungen im Innenraum der Kirche oder des Kollegs. Der 'bewegte Betrachter' wurde in Szene gesetzt, wobei posttridentinisch-jesuitische Bildauffassung, römische Modelle sowie habsburgische Repräsentation und Frömmigkeitspraxis synthetisiert wurden.
