Add to basketFirst edition, previously owned by Professor T. McKenny Hughes, with numerous letters and newspaper cuttings. 8vo. pp.19/[1p.]/pp.252. 7.75" x 5.0" x 1.0". Original blue cloth binding. Gilt titles to dulled spine. Two letters tipped-in at rear from Cadwallader John Bates, plus numerous newspaper cuttings, compliment slip from th…e publisher, and notice that the University Press are planning to issue another edition. An interesting archive regarding research on St Augustine. VG. ** "Cadwallader John Bates (14 January 1853 18 March 1902) was an historian and antiquarian who focused on Northumberland. In 1882 he purchased Langley Castle. The restoration of the Castle to its original 14th Century structure became a life's work not only for Cadwallader, but also for his wife Josephine, who continued his work after Cadwalladers death in 1902. Josephine rebuilt the original chapel on the castle roof in memory of her husband and worked tirelessly until her own death in 1933. She is buried alongside her husband in the castle grounds." *** T. McKenny Hughes, M.A., F.R.S., Woodwardian Professor of Geology in the University of Cambridge. The title of his dissertation was: "The Landing Place Of St. Augustine." (which is included in this book). *** "Arthur James Mason (4 May 1851 24 April 1928) was an English clergyman, theologian and classical scholar. He was Lady Margaret's Professor of Divinity, Master of Pembroke College, Cambridge, and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge." - See Wikipedia.
