O autor argumenta que a compulsão do capital pelo lucro e pela uniformidade o torna insustentável, esgotando não apenas o trabalhador, mas também a natureza. A Grande Crise é apresentada como uma convergência de problemas ambiental (aquecimento global), energético (esgotamento de combustíveis fósseis), alimentar (escassez e carestia) e recessão econômica que exige a busca por um novo paradigma civilizatório. O autor propõe, em resposta, a articulação de um questionamento abrangente do sistema, enfatizando a resistência e a busca por utopias concretas e plurais. A edição brasileira foi motivada pela urgência da crise global intensificada a partir de 2007 e 2008 e toma como base a segunda edição em espanhol, ampliada, publicada em 2014, onde foram adicionados novos comentários que aprofundam a discussão sobre a crise multidimensional e a subjetividade da experiência crítica. "A crise é uma só e, direta ou indiretamente, suas múltiplas facetas apontam todas para a erosão das condições naturais e sociais que tornam possível a vida humana.
