As a presenter of BBC 2's Food & Drink programme and as a regular contributor to the Radio Times cookery page, Michael Barry has become enormously popular over the years, not least because his no- nonsense approach to cooking embraces all that the keen but busy cook requires. His recipes are quick and easy to prepare but they are imaginative, colourful and appetising, too. Michael looks at the ingredients in season each month and from them creates a medley of delicious starters, main courses and puddings. Try his warming Winter Vegetable and Walnut Gratin in February to bring comfort on a cold winter's eveningor Fillets of Sea Trout and Cream Sauce in March when the first of the fresh catch is landed. Enjoy the queen of summer fruits the strawberry in July, Greengage Tart in August, and Fresh Apple Drink in September when apples are at their abundant best. A preserve, bread and drink recipe for each month, plus ideas for a relevant herb or spice and a Menu of the Month, round off Michael Barry's scrumptious celebration of seasonal cookery." Cloth. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Joseph McPherson -- Bimbash -- a classical scholar with an Oxford degree in Natural Sciences, a linguist, athlete and determined individualist, arrived in Egypt in 1901, fell in love with the country and stayed there until his death in 1946. During th…at time he wrote thousands of letters home and here is a selection of them. He was a born storyteller and his letters give a history of their times. He started as a teacher in cairo and used his long holidays boldly travelling all over the Middle East and Asia Minor . The First World War finds him in Gallipoli, clinically observing and brilliantly describing the doomed campaign and then later he is in the Sinai desert at the battles of Romani and Gaza, encouraging his Egyptian cameleers to charge shouting the McPherson clan war-cry. The later he became "Mamur Zapt" the head of the secret Police in cairo, hot on the trail of drug-dealers, exotic Madames and burgeoning revolutionaries. HB. Green cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine. 313 pages with b&w photo illus. DJ unclipped; has the odd scratch and very slight wear around edges and corners. . Book tight and clean.

Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. Joseph McPherson was a classical scholar with an Oxford degree in Natural Sciences, a linguist, athlete and determined individual…ist, arrived in Egypt in 1901. He fell in love with the country, its people and customs and stayed there until his death in 1946. In his preface, Lawrence Durrell writes, "The author of this book which has been distilled from some twenty five volumes of his correspondence covering a long and various life in Egypt was one of the most singular and captivating personages it has been my fortune to encounter. Of McPherson himself it is hard to write in a way that does justice to his many-sided personality. But one saw him, as somebody said, 'ambling about Cairo on a white mule lost in thought and looking like 'God the Father'. He gave off the most extraordinary scent of human grace; had he wandered into Tibet he would at once have been recognised as a lama of superior attainments. He was of medium height and slightly built with a small and beautiful head which housed eyes of extraordinary luminosity and smiling kindness. He had a way of sitting passively in the oriental manner which was as eloquent as a whole speech. The Egyptians loved him and thought of him as some sort of seer, though his sense of humour and witty turns of phrase made him seem more approachable than the ordinary holy man. He carried out his modest functions with a delightful good grace and warmth which won all hearts. And of course the amazing thing was that as well as all this we had to do with a fine scholar, accomplished linguist, as well as a bon viveur and man of action. His long life covered a whole period of transition as well as two wars; when he arrived in Cairo the population was only 400,000. When he died it was over two million and still growing. Something of these great changes reflect themselves in his observations.".
