Paperback. Condition: New. Bridging gaps between intellectual history, biography, and military/colonial history, Barnett Singer and John Langdon provide a challenging, readable interpretation of French imperialism and some of its leading figures from the early modern era through the Fifth Republic. They ask us to rethink and reevaluate, pulling away from the usual shoal of simplistic condemnation. In a series of finely-etched biographical studies, and with much detail on both imperial culture and wars (including World War I and II), they offer a balanced, deep, strong portrait of key makers and defenders of the French Empire, one that will surely stimulate much historical work in the field. …

Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Printing [Stated]. xi, [1], 483, [1] pages. Illustrations. Maps. Some yellow highlighting noted. Stamp on bottom edge. Sticker residue on back cover. Contains List of Illustrations, Illustrations. Maps. Preface, Notes, Bibliography, and Index. Chapters cover France's First Empire: Gains and Losses; Bugeaud and the Conquest of Algeria; Faidherbe of Senegal and West Africa; Gallieni and Joffre: Colonials Tragically Intertwined; Lyautey: Prince of Proconsuls; Heirs to Lyautey; The Twilight of French Colonialism; Bigeard: Last of the Line in Vietnam and Algeria; and "A Remnant Shall Remain.". Contains 7 photographs, and 3 maps. Inscribed by Alain Cohen (not an author and not mentioned in the Index, may be noted security professional) to General Petraeus on the half title page. Inscription reads: To General Petraeus, The Marcel Bigeard of our generation. I present you my well-worn copy of a superb book about the cultured generals who shaped and defended their greater Republic. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Respectfully, Alain Cohen. Cultured Force is a revisionist work, first because it takes vigorous issue with prevalent negative views of colonial activity, second because it presents most of the military figures who are the heroes of the tale as cultivated, sensitive, all-round men. And its focus on individual personalities brings the story to life, filling it with anecdotes and color. The result is intriguing, mostly convincing, sometimes demanding, and quite fascinating. Barnett Singer is a Professor of History at the University of Victoria, Canada. He has published several books and numerous articles on topics in modern French history. John Langdon received a B.A. with Honors in History from Le Moyne College in 1967 and a Ph.D. in History from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University in 1973. Since 1971 I have taught modern history at Le Moyne College. His publications include, as sole author, July 1914: The Long Debate, 1918-1990 (1991); four books as co-author with Edward H. Judge as follows: The Struggle Against Imperialism: Anti-Colonialism and the Cold War (2018); The Cold War Through Documents: A Global History (third edition, 2018); A Hard and Bitter Peace: A Global History of the Cold War (third edition, 2017); and Connections: A World History (third edition, 2015); and one book as co-author with Barnett Singer, Cultured Force: Builders and Defenders of France's Colonial Empire (2004). Bridging gaps between intellectual history, biography, and military/colonial history, Barnett Singer and John Langdon provide a challenging, readable interpretation of French imperialism and some of its leading figures from the early modern era through the Fifth Republic.
