Allen, and Henderson Cox - who were murdered near Tragedy Spring in the Sierra Nevada in June 1848 while scouting a wagon road over Carson Pass during the California Gold Rush. Includes detailed accounts drawn from period diaries, maps of the Mormon-Emigrant Trail, and photographs of historical artifacts including the blood-stained gold pouch and the carved tree stump memorial. It documents experience and views of parents - mainly mothers - attempting to bring up their children in health and safety in a severely disadvantaged area. It argues for practical recognition of the links between disadvantage and individual harm, and the need for community development approaches to improve the life chances of children and families. Publsihed in 1998, the book details experience of developing a strategic plan for child protection and family support, working in partnership with mothers in a severely disadvantaged neighbourhood.
