Der Tabakkonsum, die 'trockene Trunkenheit', ist nicht nur bei Seeleuten, in Bierkellern und Spelunken weit verbreitet, sondern greift auch in deutschen Jes…uitenkollegien um sich.Ein Dekret aus Rom verbietet den Ordensleuten das Tabakrauchen in Gesellschaft und lässt nur noch Ausnahmegenehmigungen unter strengsten Auflagen zu. Der erfahrene Raucher Balde springt einem gemaßregelten Ordensbruder bei, protestiert in Rom und erhält eine Abfuhr. 1657 führt der wortgewaltige Prediger und mit allen menschlichen Schwächen vertraute Beichtvater Balde den Disput auf seine Weise fort: Er veröffentlicht die Satire wider den Tabakmissbrauch - Satyra contra abusum tabaci. 1045 Zeilen in lateinischen Hexametern, ein satirisches Feuerwerk, das alle damals bekannten Facetten des Tabakkonsums Revue passieren lässt. Gestank, Grimassieren und Gehuste der Raucher werden ebenso drastisch beschrieben wie der Kult ums Pfeifensammeln. Den 'GenussGenossen', die sich mit 'wohligem Nebeldunst' umhüllen, hält der Satiriker drakonisch entgegen: 'Wenn diese barbarische Hitze zu heftig angreift und die Organe vertrocknen lässt: da wird die Leber bald zu Stein'. Ja der rauchende Dichter, der die geistig anregende Wirkung des Nikotins ins Feld führt, spottet sogar über sich selbst: 'Wenn sich durch das Tabakkraut spitze Stacheln tief in die Brust bohren, dann hat die dichterische Ader freien Lauf, dann eilen die Füße, und die Rhythmen sammeln sich kompagnieweise in großer Zahl, gerade so als hätten sie den Fahneneid geleistet.'Der neue Band der excerpta classica bringt erstmals eine wortgetreue deutsche Übersetzung der brillanten Tabaksatire.
