Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 2. The Andean Hybrid Baroque is the first comprehensive study of the architecture and architectural sculpture of Southern Peru in the late colonial period (1660s-1820s), an enduring and polemical subject in Latin American art history. In the southern Andes during the last ce…ntury and a half of colonial rule, when the Spanish crown was losing its grip on the Americas and Amerindian groups began organizing into activist and increasingly violent political movements, a style of architectural sculpture emerged that remains one of the most vigorous and creative outcomes of the meeting of two cultures. The Andean Hybrid Baroque (also known as "Mestizo Style"), was a flourishing school of carving distinguished by its virtuoso combination of European late Renaissance and Baroque forms with Andean sacred and profane symbolism, some of it originating in the pre-Hispanic era. The Andean Hybrid Baroque found its genesis and most comprehensive iconographical expression in the architecture of Catholic churches, chapels, cloisters, and conventual buildings. Drawing on hundreds of primary documents and on ethno-historical and anthropological literature that has rarely been applied to an art-historical subject, Gauvin Alexander Bailey provides the most substantial study of colonial Peruvian architecture in decades. The product of five years of photographic surveys in Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina, as well as research in governmental and ecclesiastical archives in Latin America and Europe, Bailey's richly illustrated study examines the construction history and decoration of forty-four churches. It offers a fundamentally new understanding of the chronology, regional variations, and diffusion of the Andean Hybrid Baroque style, as well as a fresh interpretation of its relationship to indigenous Andean culture. "Gauvin Alexander Bailey's The Andean Hybrid Baroque is a magnificent and ambitious study that not only covers an important geographic area of the southern Andes but also encompasses, in an informative and ordered style, a complex and dense constellation of pre-Hispanic and European cultural references in constant change." --Ramon Mujica Pinilla, Universidad de San Marcos, Lima, Peru "Gauvin Alexander Bailey's new book will surely become a textbook and standard resource for Andean art and architecture. With exciting insights into the colonial period in the southern Andes for the avid reader, and with original archival research for the inquisitive scholar, The Andean Hybrid Baroque challenges many of the facile suppositions about the indigenous and European cultural encounter and religious worldview. The author examines church facades in Peru and Bolivia, dating and scrutinizing the detailed carving work of native artists and combining that visual information with the testimony of colonial historians, inquisition records, and the images on textiles and queros (drinking cups). The result is an original and nuanced contribution to Andean scholarship." --Jaime Lara, University of Notre Dame .

Explore how sacred art evolved in early Mexico, adapting to local cultures and artistic traditions. This beautifully illustrated book reveals the importance of saints in New Spain, a viceroyalty that was part of the Spanish Empire from 1521-1821, covering modern-day Mexico, Central America, and the US So…uthwest. In the late sixteenth century, Rome's attempts to manage sanctity as an official process had a profound impact throughout Spain and the Spanish viceroyalties. Saintly devotions traveled to Mexico, and circulated within the vast territory as images or print, then to be transformed by New Spain's own communities. Drawing on collections from Mexico and the United States, this book examines the role of images in the construction of the holy: these paintings, sculptures, and engravings routinely used to propagate, celebrate, and venerate saintly figures, and used in official beatification and canonization proceedings. The relationship between sanctity and the pictorial is a long, revered tradition that continues in the work of New Mexico's santero artists today.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - One of the most mysterious buildings in the Western hemisphere, King Henri Christophe's lavish neoclassical palace in the rain forest, enthrones the small Haitian town of Milot. Begun less than a decade after the Haitian Revolution for independence (1804) by the first black African king in…the Americas, this massive monument was built to showcase Haiti's power and self-confidence. Despite its status as UNESCO World Heritage and a tourist attraction, the unusual building has never before been the subject of a study. On the basis of unpublished archival sources and exact photographic documentation, this book is the first to publish detailed information about the genesis this extraordinary architecture and the story of its builder.

English text.; Hardcover (with dust jacket).; 23 x 29 cm.; 1.2 kg.; 256 pages with black and white and a few colour illustrations.; Used with minor signs of wear on the exterior and interior. Minor edge wear.; slamic Art and Architecture Series: Number 6.; The p…ractice of imitating Chinese blue-and- white porcelain in Iran began in the Timurid period (c. 1370-1505). In 1949, Sir Basil Gray wrote, "we do not unfortunately know much more about this period of Persian pottery and it remains notoriously elusive." Attempts to distinguish wares actually made in Iran during the 15th century failed because they depended on analysis of the decoration alone. Idiosyncrasies of individual workshops could not be distinguished, and the dates of Chinese models could serve only as broad guidelines. The new approach, which is fundamental to this study, is petrographic analysis. This technique, derived from the earth sciences, is used to characterize production centres on the basis of the presence and nature of minerals and rock inclusions found within the body. As this particular pottery is made of stonepaste, which is primarily composed of quartz, new criteria for characterization were developed specifically for this research. By analysis of materials from kilns and other evidence of manufacture, it is possible to characterize a centre of production, and at times even distinguish separate workshops in the same centre. Analysis of whole objects enables their attribution to these defined centres, and allows stylistic characterization of each centre. One of the most important findings of this study was the identification of Nishapur in northeastern Iran as a major production centre. The work begins by introducing the problem and discussing the stimulus, the Chinese porcelain trade. It then addresses the local response, first from the "inside" (petrographic analysis) and then from the "outside," classifying ornament on the basis of its Chinese model. The workshops are then identified and dated on the basis of stylistic and technical characteristics. This information is woven into the historical narrative, and a chronology of the ceramic industry is proposed. Finally, the authors comment broadly on the industry in the Timurid period and consider Timurid pottery within the larger context of Islamic ceramics.
