Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Rarely found as good as this! First edition, first issue (with pp 215-220; 'In the majority of copies pages 215-220 are cancelled out, it being evident from the text that the author had been a little too outspoken over a controversy concerning the Manton Patent Breech, that arose bet…ween Mr. Manton and the Duke of Richmond' (Abbey). Quarto, xvi, [2, contents], 432, [6] pp. With all seven hand coloured aquatints (including frontispiece portrait) and all three folding tables at rear. As is sometimes the case, this copy has been bound without the two uncoloured plates. Contemporary brown calf, expertly rebacked to style, retaining the original spine, compartments decoratively blind stamped and with gilt lettering, marbled endpapers and edges. Moderate age mottling to text, ink name to verso fep (LP Sheppard) & tp (Alex MacRen?), bookplate to fpd (John M Schiff), old repair to upper margin of Aaa3 (p367/8), corner tip missing 403/4. Overall, a very good copy of the uncommon first issue. (283*228 mm). (Abbey Life 393. Schwerdt IV p93). WEST J. (illustrator).
