First Austen illustrated edition of this Greek pastoral romance, featuring the Thornley English translation drawn more from a 1605 Latin translation, than the Greek original. Austen (1886-1948), was a popular English book illustrator whose early works draw more from Beardley influence, but then shifted in 1925 as evidenced by these illustrations to a decidedly Art Deco technique.
