4to. 199, [1] pp. Woodcut-engraved decorated title, colour frontisp., 11 colour plates, 4 black & white plates, numerous woodcut-engraved text illustrations. Cream-coloured publisher's cloth, gilt lozenge on front cover, gilt lettering on spine, w/ d.j. cover art illust. by Austen, lettering in blue (chipping head & foot of spine, minor tears to couple corners, creasing, dustsoiling), still NF/G copy, from library of Carlyle F. Streit (1904-1977), noted Cleveland, Ohio furniture manufacturer and designer, featuring bookplate by John Austen. First Austen illustrated edition of this Greek pastoral romance, featuring the Thornley English translation drawn more from a 1605 Latin translation, than the Greek original. Austen (1886-1948), was a popular English book illustrator whose early works draw more from Beardley influence, but then shifted in 1925 as evidenced by these illustrations to a decidedly Art Deco technique.
