Als wundärztlicher Gehilfe nach Leipzig gekommen, machte er sich durch seinen Eifer im Studium der Anatomie so bemerklich, dass er Assistent und im Jahre 1814 Prosector am anatomischen Theater in Leipzig wurde, welche Stelle es bis zu seinem am 30. Jänner 1833 eingetretenen Tode verwaltete, nachdem er schon 1815 in Erfurt den Doctorgrad erworben hatte. Bock war namentlich ausgezeichnet als Lehrer durch seine Befähigung zu klarer Darstellung anatomischer Gegenstände und als Proscctor durch seine technische Gewandtheit in Anfertigung anatomischer Präparate, durch welche er das anatomische Museum in Leipzig wesentlich bereichert hat. August Carl Bock (1782-1833), who published his 'Beschreibung der fünften Nervenpaares und seiner Verbindungen mit anderen Nerven, vorzüglich mit dem Gangliensysteme' (Description of the fifth nerve pair and its connections with other nerves, with special reference to the ganglionic system) in Leipzig it 1817, was largely guided by previous neuroanatomical work by Johann Friedrich Meckel (1724-1774), summarized in his 'Tractus anatomico physiologicus de quinto pare nervorum cerebri'. Bock's little-known work is important for the early contribution it made to the conceptualization of the neural circuit --now generally accepted on the basis of neuroanatomical evidence. In particular, Bock demonstrated the connections between the sympathetic nerves and the autonomic ganglia related to the eye, differing on this point from Meckel who was at that time regarded as the authority on the neuroanatomy of the fifth cranial nerve. Of further interest are the originality of the technique used, the elegant presentation of the results and the original choice of the dissection model of the trigeminal block for the teaching of neuroanatomy in the early nineteenth century." He came to Leipzig as a wound doctor's assistant and made such a name for himself through his zeal in the study of anatomy that he became assistant and in 1814 prosector at the anatomical theatre in Leipzig, a post he held until his death on 30 January 1833, having already obtained his doctorate in Erfurt in 1815. Bock was particularly distinguished as a teacher by his ability to present anatomical objects clearly and as a prosetor by his technical skill in the preparation of anatomical specimens, through which he substantially enriched the anatomical museum in Leipzig. His numerous writings, of which a "very complete list" can be found in Callisen's med.
